Lightroom Classic Crashes PC [Windows 10]

I just installed the latest version of Lightroom Classic.

I started doing an "Add" import from photos on one of my drives.

During the import process my screen goes black, and my PC crashes.

I restart my PC and it loads fine, I then boot up Lightroom Classic again, and it shuts the PC down (no import action done - it just loads for a bit then crashes my PC).

I restarted the PC again, this time I deleted the Catalog data, and started Lightroom Classic again - this time it boots fine, no issues, and I can navigate.

I turned off GPU acceleration, and tried the process from scratch, but as soon as I import, it crashes the PC.

Please help.

Some serious, critical and fatal problems in that computer, those need to be fixed.

Have you altered settings in the BIOS?

Is the BIOS up to date

Are the Chip-Set drivers up to date

What make/model of computer?

What make/model of Motherboard?

Is this a home built PC?

Is this a store bought PC under warranty that you can get tech support on?

You might want to use Google and search on :

"Performance power management features on processor 0 in group 0 are disabled due to a firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware."

and

Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error

Are you having an issue with your power supply? Is it too small? Is it failing? Is the air inlet full of dust bunnys? Is a cable loose?

Are you having a cooling issue? Dust bunnys on air inlets/outlets? Dust on internal components?

It looks like I fixed it.

I googled that error - and it came up with a Power supply issue for some.

I then tweaked my Power settings in windows (to an ultra power profile) and then restarted, went to my BIOS, checked that all the voltages seem okay, and then I ran the Asus mobo's smart wizard to tweak settings there.
The wizard CLAIMS to have increased CPU performance by 8%, but all it did was clock it down from 4ghz to 3.9ghz (not sure if it was accidentally over and that what was causing the issue - I never overclock).

But it seems to upload all the RAW files fine now without crashing my PC.

Holding thumbs it remains stable till my upgrade in Dec 😛

Thanks all for the help!

In Window OS use the events viewer, probably a critical event. That would give a clue as to what broke.

So I checked and the errors I got was:

  • Error: "Performance power management features on processor 0 in group 0 are disabled due to a firmware problem. Check with the computer manufacturer for updated firmware." (this goes from processor 0 in group 0 to processor 11 in group 0"
  • Error: "The previous system shutdown at 10:27:34 on ‎2022/‎05/‎25 was unexpected."
  • Critical: "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

Once it gave the error today:

"A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Reported by component: Processor Core
Error Source: Machine Check Exception
Error Type: Cache Hierarchy Error
Processor APIC ID: 1

The details view of this entry contains further information."

Am I potentially trying to import TOO much, and the CPU just dies?

PC crashing is almost always a driver problem or a hardware malfunction. Make sure all of your drivers are up-to-date, and if they are up-to-date try re-installing them to make sure there is no corruption of the drivers.

Then you will need to run diagnostics on all of your hardware (hard disk, memory, motherboard and don't forget the cooling system).

Also, try removing all USB devices such as cell phone, tablet, drawing device (except keyboard, mouse and external HD, leave these connected).

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. We are sorry for the trouble with Lightroom Classic. If you can clarify a few things for me, we can get to the bottom of this.

Could you please share the version of Lightroom Classic from Help > About Lightroom Classic and the operating system you are working on? Does the crash when importing specific images, or is it regardless of the photos?

What is the format of the files you are importing? Are they JPEG or RAW? Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?

The crash could be at preview creation or a damaged catalog. Where is the catalog stored?

Go to Edit > Catalog Settings > General > Information to know the exact location of the catalog.

Please follow the steps in this article to troubleshoot the existing preview database of Lightroom Classic: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/lightroom-gives-error-preview-cache.html

You can create a new test catalog and merge the existing one with the new one to avoid broken or damaged databases. Copy the primary catalog or the catalog in question and place it on your computer's desktop.

  • Press the Alt (Win) or OPT (macOS) when launching Lightroom Classic.
  • Choose the option to create a new catalog and create a new one on the internal drive.

Let us know if Lightroom Classic still crashes.

We are here to help,

Thanks!
