Lightroom Classic crashes shortly after opening

Hey guys,

I'm stumped on this one. I've done everything I can think of to diagnose and I can't get LR to stay open. I'm on Windows 11 on a very fast machine.

What's happening: I open Lightroom Classic and within about 15 seconds, it just force closes. I can't see anything in Event Viewer that tells me what exactly caused the crashed.

What I've done:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled LR, CC (using the AdobeCreativeCloudCleanerTool as well)
  • Diasabled GPU in preferences
  • Updated C++ Redistro's
  • Updated all drivers
  • Repaired Windows
  • Memory Scans/DISM/Hard Drive checks (all clear)
  • Rolled back Windows Update

What else can I try?

Tried the admin account route--that didn't work. See attached for Sysinfo.

Did you try starting Lightroom Classic with a new catalog? This could be caused by catalog corruption.

UPDATE: I bit the bullet and did a fresh install of Windows, Adobe CC, & Lightroom. Same friggin problem. I even downgraded to Lightroom 13.1 and used a backup Catalog from a couple months ago and it's still force closing.

I'm ripping my hair out. What else can I try to figure out the root cause?

Where do you keep your catalog? What hard drive, And when you attempted a new catalog, was that on the same drive?

I'm running 4 m2 SSD's. The catalog is located on F: and all of my photos are on my Synology, mapped as the P: drive.

While LrC just closes , that might not be seen by the pertinent app as a crash. I notice you did not state that you get a crash report to send on to Adobe.

Also, while you state that you have looked in the Event Viewer, and fond nothing on point. And as I would suspect the event viewer may show a overheat. Can you still (anyway) eliminate a possible computer overheat going on. Either CPU or GPU, and any dust bunnies at CPU, GPU, PSU (some overlook that one) and Inlets/outlets. Oh, and if you have that computer opened to look (desktop???) anything odd with the GPU? Remember LrC is a resource hog, overheat can effect it badly.

No temperature issues. I'm running a watercooled Nvidia 4090 (about 56 degrees) and watercooled CPU (about 36 degrees).

I sometimes get the crash report dialog (which I've submitted multiple)--but most times LR just force closes.

UPDATE #2: I got it working--sort of. I used my catalog backup from a few months ago. LR said it was corrupt. I attempted to repair it a few times (LR kept force-closing during the repair process). I finally got it repaired though. I can now look through photos and make some small edits. However, whenever I try to syncronize a folder, it force-closes again. Is there a log file I can provide from somewhere to help diagnose?

A couple of observations from the crash report.

1. LrC version? This might be a holdover in the code, perhaps this does not accurately reflect your actual LrC version, but:

applicationName="Adobe Lightroom Classic" applicationVersion="13.1" build="[202312111226-41a494e8]"

so what LrC version do you have?

2. What failed

<crash exception="EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" exceptionCode="0xc0000005" instruction="0x000000005E278ADC">
<backtrace crashedThread="0">
<thread index="0">
<stackStatement index="0" address="0x000000005E278ADC" symbolname="luaopen_math"/>

so, looking at luaopen_math, and searching in this community, the following shows up (along with others, including yours):

Solution was to update LrC.

Another talks to GPU driver update, but I do not think that is your problem:

(from your MS Windos OS Sys Info; Adapter Description NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090
Driver Version 32.0.15.5599 , that is up to date)

I was using v13.4 when this issue started. After I reinstalled Windows, I only installed 13.1 to see if that fixed it. That's what al least let me open LR without it crashing immediately. I just upgraded to 13.4 and I get the prompt to upgrade my catalog to the new version--and now it force closes when trying to upgrade the catalog. And now I'm back to now being able to open LR at all.
