Lightroom Classic not recognizing my external hard drive after disconnect.

I am traveling. Started using a new external HD a few months ago. I powered down before I disconnected my hard drive and packed everything for travel. I arrived at my destination, shot about 6 mini sessions. Not only did my Lightroom not recognize all my old catalogs on my HD, the file names are all wrong and they won’t reconnect even when I go to the images in my Lightroom catalog on my external HD. In addition to that it won’t let me add images to my hard drive. I can see and use the external hard drive from files. Help! I need to be able to use my external HD. I’m Not on a Mac. Any help would be grately appreciated.

Another issue to resolve. Did you permantly assigned a drive letter to the external hard drive? If not, do so.

Some diagnostic steps to take.

1. Close Lightroom Classic

2. Use Windows File Explorer. Select that external hard drive, locate the Lightroom Catalog on it. The lrcat file. Double click on the catalog.

3. Is this the catalog you were expecting?

This assumes you placed the catalog on the external hard drive.

Ok so when I go into the external HD and open the catalog from there it opens but still says the files cannot be found? What am I doing wrong here?

You say "I'm not on a Mac". Does that mean that you are usually on a Mac and not now? That could exlain it. If the hard drive was formatted in HFS+ (Mac formatting), then a Windows computer cannot read or write to that drive.

No. For reference, if the operating system mattered or was a common issue. It’s the same computer same everything. I just don’t understand why I can open the drive in files and see all my exported images and the light room catalog, but not be able to connect them to Lightroom. Or now create new catalogs on the external HD. Lightroom cannot do it but I can create a file and import to the file.

Can you explain in more detail what you are trying to do and what does (not) happen? "Lightroom can't do it" doesn't mean much.
