I had to reinstall due to a computer problem. When I closed lightroom it would ask if I wanted to back up my changes. That doesnt come up now, and my edits aren't being saved.

Explain what you mean "my edits are not being saved".
While you are working in Lightroom all the work you do is being recorded and saved to the Lightroom Catalog file. This happens real time there is no save function. If you close Lightroom and reopen at a later time you should see the work and edits to your images.
If you mean that when you view in other applications you do not see the effects of your edits, then this is as designed other applications cannot read info from from your Lightroom Catalogfile. However there are options in Lightroom that allow you to write the info to the file for sharing with other applications.

I'm having this problem and it's not backup. I got a new computer, I brought the array over with the photos and the drive with the catalogs. I open the catalog. I make changes to metadata and I create collections. I close lightroom classic. I open lightroom classic again, my changes to metadata are not present, my new collections are not there, and lightroom doesn't automatically open the catalog despite the option being "open most recently used". Furthermore, the date-modified on the catalog file is not updated to today's date/time - it's still the data from when I last opened it on the previous computer.

LrC might be having an issue understanding last catalog used. Use your OS file manager , find the correct catalog, double click on it, any difference?

I went back to a v9 catalog backup, converted that, and everything seems to be working.

Check your Catalog Settings [Ctrl+Alt+comma]
And when you do see the Backup dialog- be certain it is making the backup zip file to another physical hard drive!

Don't worry. Your edits are safe (and saved). This dialog is for making a backup copy of your catalog, not for saving the edits. The catalog contains the edits and the edits are automatically written into the catalog. It's a good idea to make regular backups of the catalog, but it does not mean that edits are not saved if you don't do that each time.

LR Classic Never Asks if you want to Backup your Changes as the original file is never changed.
It does ask if you want to Back Up the Catalog file, the Database file LR uses.
By Default LR is set to backup the catalog file once a week. So if it hasn't been at least 1 week since the last time you backed up the catalog file that dialog box will not come up.
In all honesty you need to learn how LR works and how to properly work with LR.
You can do that by viewing some of the good online tutorials on the Adobe website for using LR Classic, they are free.

Not great form to reply in a very old posting with a not very related issue, you should post your own problem in a new post. The above about backups and database record saves, not upgrades.
When you do create your post, include your OS, and the LrC version you upgraded from at a minimum

LR is a disgrace. New issues every single day. I have a list of 50 different problems since I moved from a very old version to the new "rental" one. The last one is LR not saving my edits to the HD. But some people will here keep pretending they don't know what we are talking about.

You’ve posted to an ancient thread. It is highly unlikely that the issue described in this thread, though not impossible, is the same one you are currently experiencing. Rather than resurrect an old thread that is seemingly similar, you are better off posting to a new thread with fresh, complete information, including system information, a complete description of the problem, and step-by-step instructions for reproduction.
If the issue is the same, we will merge you back into the appropriate location.
Thank you!
