Lightroom Classic numbering photos out of sequence

I import my photos by inserting the SD card in the slot in my laptop and importing into LR Classic.  Lately, I've been having a problem with the numbering sequence.

 

I name my photos by date with a number extension.  I.E. 8-31-23-1, -2, -3, etc.  There have been several times lately that I have done this.  The photos show up in order (they are sorted by capture time), but the numbers are all out of sequence.  

 

8-31-23-1 is first photo.  Second should be -2, but it could be -10, next could be -3 or it could be -15.  This is extremely annoying.  It never happened until recently.  Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it?

Hallo JAnetinNJ. I have exactly the problem you have! The Pictures appear in the right sequence, but the number they get i, in the sequence (I chosed 001 starting by 1) is absolutely random! From the answers you got, I'm not sure you had the right answer. Do you still have the same problem?

I used to delete some photos in camera. There was a suggestion that might
have caused the issue. I stopped doing that and I haven't had the problem
since.

I never use to delete photos in camera...but I solved the problem otherwise. I used to import with personal renaming AA MM DD - personal name - number sequence. Now, instead of writing just a personal name, I write, as personal name directly date and name: for ex. 241009-holidays Paris in the slot personal name. The system gives the sequence. The problem disapperead! It forces me to import photos with the same date...but it's not so a big problem for me. I'm happy the sequence is correct now


Sorry I mean that now I use the option "personal name - sequence" and as personal name I directly write the date end title. Hope is clear...

Thank you all for responses.  I have never had to use 2-3 digits for sequence before to number my photos.  I will give it a try on my next import.  I do have it set to import by capture time.  The numbering sequence seems to be totally random.  

 

Hopefully, that will solve the issue, because it's driving me crazy!

such an annoying and patronising answer.  I have used Lightroom for nearly 10 years now and I have never had this sequencing issue.  I have always used the same format and it has never glitched like this, until this weekend.  How do you explain that in the infinite wisdom?

I have also been having this issue recently.  I made the mistake of trying to renumber the photos outside of Lightroom which resulted in unlinking all my edits to all my photos :S

I understand all that.  This issue is regarding photos that are newly imported.  I do all the renaming through LR.

P.S. a future issue, dates sorting oddly. you would be better naming by the syntax YYYYMMDD as opposed to MMDDYY (dashes or underscores optional), Some rename by YYYYMMDD_hhmmss

Your sequance number needs to be 2, perhaps 3 digits.

i.e

001, 002, 003, 004, 005, 006, 007, 008, 009, 010...etc

not

1,2,3, 4, 5,6, 7, 8, 9..10, 11..etc

that 10, coming before 2, in sort order, will the 1 in the number 10 comes before the 2, hence the sort becomes, 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, ... eventualy 2, etc

Good point. I always use four digits starting with 0001.

I don't see that issue here. In the import screen, lower right corner, is the "Sort By" set to capture time? That's all I can think of checking before you do the import and LrC renames and renumbers your images.
