Question

Lightroom consumes all free disk space while merging HDR panorama on Mac

Does anybody know, which folder is used by the LR Classic for temporary files while merging HDR Panorama?

My system disk is only a 120GB SSD and even if I clear 30GB of free space, LR fills it up within minutes.

I'm unable to find, which folder is used for temp storage, so I could symlink it to the secondary HDD or NAS.

Well, it's not $TMPDIR and it's not ~/Library/Caches neither...

Below you can see a screenshot, when I tried to run HDR Panorama merge once more.

The upper one has 11MB of free space, the lower one is after I closed LR and suddenly got extra 34GB.

All this without any change in size of the temp/cache dirs.

Anybody has other idea? And no, I'm not going to buy a new SSD, when I can just use the 2+TB free on my NAS. ;-)

I hope you bought a lot of coffee if you manage to do that...

See this post for a lengthy discussion on this topic:

LR Classic - changing the temp (scratch) drive? It fills up my start-up drive completely with some operations

With only 30GB of free space on your system drive the best solution is to upgrade it to at least 256GB. Is there some reason why you aren't considering that option?

In order to create the HDR panorama, Lightroom will first merge the HDR brackets to HDR DNG, then merge these brackets to panorama, and when that has finished the HDR DNG's are deleted again. That is why it needs quite a bit of disk space during this operation.

That's pretty clear, I'm well aware, that the merge process will need quite a lot of space, I just want to know, how can I provide it (directory symlink) to the software. I was trying to run a du command on directories on the system disk and it's too much for the system to do while LR is merging. Maybe I'll try opening LR with higher nice value, to give it a lower priority, but I'm afraid, that it won't help.

The Camera Raw cache probably has nothing to do with this. I would think that Lightroom uses Users/Username/Library/Caches/Adobe/ for it, but I'm not sure.

Probably the Camera RAW CACHE file (I am lacking wherever I supposedly learned that from, no proof)

Sadly, that's not the actual folder.

1) I have the limit set to 5GB

2) I changed that folder to a secondary disk and it's not getting filled during the merge (while the system disk is)
