Lightroom creates PSD copy before I open image to edit in Photoshop. How do I stop that?

So, I usually press "command + E" to open a RAW file in Photoshop. But now when I press "command + E" Lightroom creates a PSD file first and then opens that PSD file. Is there a way to reset this so Lightoom does not create the PSD file first but rather renders the image straight from the RAW file? 

 

After I updated Lightroom to a newer version a window came up when I hit "command + E" for the first time and it said something to the effect: "Do you want to render the file in Lighroom beforeopening or in Photoshop." I clicked Lightroom and I shouldnt have done that. But it is not asking me that question anymore now because I also clicked "don't ask me again". 

 

Any idea how I can stop Lightrom from creating PSD copies before opening the file in Photoshop?

"IF" your Camera Raw is not up to date and fully compatible with the version of Lightroom you are using then Lightroom will be forced to create the PSD file before it opens Photoshop because Photoshop cannot edit raw data. When Camera Raw is fully compatible with Lightroom the data will transfer to Photoshop without the file being created first, and the PSD or TIF file will be created at the end of the Photoshop session. Is it possible that your version of Camera Raw is not fully up to date? In any case, once a raw file has been opened in Photoshop, when the editing session is complete a new file must be created because Photoshop cannot edit or save raw image data. That's why the Camera Raw plug-in is required.

    Jim, I think that is exactly what happend. That was the window that popped up after I updated Lightroom. It said something to the effect that Camera Raw is not up to date so I had the option to either have Lightroom render a file first or to just open it in Photoshop anyways. Unfortunatelly I clicked on the option to have Lightroom render the image first before opening in PS and now it creates the PSD file first. Is there a way to fix this? I have creative cloud running and it says that Camera Raw is up to date.

    Not sure what you're seeing or why it's a PSD. What happens on this end is Edit in Photoshop renders a raw using ACR and opens the image in Photoshop, awaiting to be saved. Until you do so, it's not a PSD or anything else. IF you click Save, the kind of file (PSD, JPEG etc) setup in LR's Edit In preferences will take place. Are you saying that before you save, just after the raw is rendered in Photoshop, it's somehow a saved PSD? 

    Let's see a screen capture of your preferences for External Editing.

      So, I attached some images that hopefully help. Here is what USED to happen when I wanted to edit a photos from Lightroom in Photoshop:

       

      1. select the photo

      2. press "command + E"

      3. Image opens in Photoshop

       

      NOW what is happening:

      1. select the photo

      2. press "command + E"

      3. Lightroom creates a PSD copy next to the ARW file

      4. Lightroom opens the PSD copy in Photoshop

       

      I would like to go back to the first version where there is no extra PSD copy created.

      The first 1-3 are exactly as expected and designed. 

       

      I'm not sure about that 2nd set (1-4). In that group, Photoshop will only save the PSD next to the ARW when you specifically select the Save command in Photoshop. Then you get that 2nd variation, as a PSD cataloged in LR. LR shouldn't open it unless you ask it do and of course, when I say it opens, it allows Photoshop to open it. 

      Bottom line if I understand this:

      1. Nothing is saved after the image is rendered into Photoshop until you actually allow it to be saved. 

      2. It is saved and then placed into the catalog next to the raw, in the format and specifications in your preferences you've shown us. 

      3. It isn't (shouldn't) be saved until step to above. 

      4. Once saved, if you close it and go back to LR, you can of course open it from LR into Photoshop. 

      5. There should be one and only one PSD, again, if you conduct step #2 (actually tell Photoshop to save). 

      6. DO NOT use Save As.
