Lightroom now uses (ALL) my memory and almost kills my system

Explorer ,
Apr 28, 2022 Apr 28, 2022

Since the last update, Lightroom classic is using all my memory all of the time even when idle.  Even when that is the only thing open, it almost freezes my system.  I can't get anything done in Lightroom, Please help!!

I am on Windows 10 pro, 16GB of Ram, Core I7 with 4 cores, 8 logical processors.  It worked fine in the past.  What has changed?  It seems to be a bug where it is hung-up on something, or stuck in some processing loop and costantly flickers and feezes for several seconds over and over.  I have deleted lightroom all off the preferences, twice.  When I reinstall and restore my last backup, the probems remain.  My computer and all drivers are up to date.  I have ruled out any GPU or video card issues.  Any suggestions?

Hey, @joshgraff! Welcome to the Lightroom Classic community. I'll help you figure this out.

You can log in to Lightroom Web (https://adobe.ly/3uv2zCA) and look for the Sync Issues category near the Deleted section on the left part of the screen. If there are any Sync issues, check the file name, apply small edits or tags, and wait a while to check if the edits sync to the cloud.

Please ensure you have backups for the original images in the Sync issues section and clear them from the delete

Can't reproduce it here. It starts at about 1.5 GB idle, and then levels off around 10GB after a period of working.

Memory leaks aren't something we often see these days, but the general consensus seems to be that third-party plugins etc would be the prime suspect.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

I have just started seeing this on a new M1Pro Macbook Pro - twice in the past few days. Note that I'm running LRC in Rosetta/emulation mode for Canon tethering. I don't have much more context since it's just started happening and I rush to quit everything when I get the pop-up saying that the system is running out of memory. I'll try to capture more info if it happens again. Here's my current system info:

If you have been working for some time in Lightroom, it is quite normal for it to use 7 GB RAM, even when idle.

When I work for long periods with large files, RAM consumption can rise to 15 GB.

What's not normal, is the 99% CPU used by Lightroom. (if it's idle)

Do you have face recognition or address lookup or anything else running in the background?

No, the CPU is only at 99% when importing, converting to DNG or multi-masking in the Develope module.  I definitly have GPS and Facial recongnition OFF.  I would save facial recognition for an overnight task.  Hopefully the guy asking for system information can shed some light.

Actually, there is one thing that might explain it:

When you have enabled "use GPU for image processing", the dedicated VRAM usage tends to almost max out quickly. That has never been a problem for me, because it's released/reallocated if needed by other applications, and it has never impacted performance here. Everything works smoothly and seamlessly even with many applications open.

But with "unified memory", shared by system and GPU, it might start to eat into general system memory. Then I can see it becoming a problem.

I have tried all variations of using or not using the video card.  I used to find that it works best if turned off and only using the integrated video card.   My Nvidia is an old, weak card and could not help much anyway.  But that was my first guess also, that is must have some conflict with the Video card.

That was specifically a response to the poster with an M1 Mac, which does have a single memory pool for both system and GPU.

On a Windows machine with a dedicated video card that shouldn't apply - but if you now say there is an integrated Intel GPU in the mix, that might be a factor. You probably need to disable the Intel GPU completely.

As I said further up, I can't reproduce the high system memory usage on Windows 10 with a dedicated Quadro P2000 series card.

Hi, same problem. MAcbook Pro M1Max - uses 12-15 gigs of memory, even in idle.

The same here, sometimes more sometimes less. The report is created when Lightroom had nothing to do.

Whene ist Tethering in the regular Lightroom Classic working again? Maybe with a few improvements...

sorry for late reply, I made new account, sice i forgot the login info,

Windows 11 (with all updates)  Lightroom Classic, latest version.
I only have 32 GB, should I buy another 32GB stick?
Sometimes I get bluescreen, I've opened the task manager and I can see that lightroom makes a huge temp file, called cr_sdk_something.tmp,  It is normal? lol this file locks up my M2 ssd, the PC becomes frozen for 10-20 secs then. This happens with i apply AI denoise to more than 1000 files.

I am a photographer and I am very frustrated, I am a week late with a photo edition that Lightroom took up 64gb in my memory and that causes a severe delay in my work, my iMac freezes

This has been happening frequently with 12.4. Requires a restart to clear the ram.

System: Mac Studio Ultra / 128GB ram / 48-core GPU / 20-core CPU.

LR catalog and previews are on the mac's internal 2TB SSD

OS Ventura 13.5

I'm simply walking through 24MP Nikon D750 raw files doing general corrections like guided perspective control. There isn't much AI masking, clone/heal, HDR/Pano building. Just normal edits. PS is open but nothing in the workspace yet it holds on to 68GB. I keep getting "your system has run out of application memory" which brings the whole computer to its knees. A 128GB RAM system...

Lightroom is just me pushing through 24MP Nikon D750 raw files. Not doing panos, hdr, or any AI masking. No clone/heal in scene. LR is just eating RAM. Photoshop is open but no files in the workspace sitting at 68GB.Lightroom is just me pushing through 24MP Nikon D750 raw files. Not doing panos, hdr, or any AI masking. No clone/heal in scene. You Mac guys probably need to start a new thread, not hijack one which is clearly about Windows machines.

You are certain that Mac isn't crossconpiled from single code base into arm instruction set?

Cross-compiled or not, this thread was originally started by a Windows user back in April 2022. Since then Adobe have released LrC 12 plus 5 updates and Apple have released Ventura plus 5 updates.  Therefore, the chances of your issue being the same as the OP are slim at best. As @Keith Reeder suggested, you should start a new thread. The new thread should include a copy of your System Info as obtained from LrC Help > System Info menu item as shown in attached screenshot.

Same and same, pro photographer significantly behind because my system is suddenly brought to a crawl. I'm also on Mac. Have you found a solution yet?

Can confirm, still happening in 2024, makes lightroom downright unusable and is driving me absolutely crazy.

When Lightroom is idle, it starts filling ram until it's killed and restarted. 32 gig of ram just completely filled by nothing. I read somewhere it might be related to rebuilding the cloud cache but I have no idea.

If you have cloud sync enabled, then try 'Pausing' it from the cloud icon at top right corner of application UI.

Typically, the underlying issue is that one or more files is stuck in the sync queue.

You're right that does alleviate the issue, but as soon as I reenable cloud sync it starts crashing again.

Is there a way to resolve it? I quite like the cloud sync feature.
