Question

Lightroom performing slow on iMac Pro (2017)

Hi I have the 2017 iMac pro, with the following spec's:

Processor: 3.2 GHz Intel Xeon W

Memory: 32GB 2666 MHz DDR4

Graphics: Radeon Pro Vega 56 8 GB

MacOS - Mojave

This should be a sufficiant machine to cope with anything adobe related, so why is lightroom giving me spinning Pizza wheel for simple tasks like clone tool, or brush? also when i zoom in and out there is a definate lag to the rendering of the image.

I do import Raw files as 1:1, but again I thought this machine would handle something like that perectly fine, should i import smart previews?

Lightroom is all up to date.

Raw files are stored externally andare from a 32mp sensor (Canon Eos R) - I dont know if you need this info or not, I just want to give as much detail as possible.

Please help this is doing my head in.

"This should be a sufficiant machine to cope with anything adobe related"

Your computer is telling you otherwise. Listen to what it is telling you.

"why is lightroom giving me spinning Pizza wheel for simple tasks like clone tool, or brush? also when i zoom in and out there is a definate lag to the rendering of the image"

These are common problems when brushing and spot healing. They are very CPU intensive. You don't state what size your monitor is (in pixels, not inches), please provide that information.

In any event, if these are your problems, turn the GPU off in Lightroom Classic (Preferences->Performance->Use Graphics Processor should be set to OFF) and see if the problem improves.

5120x2880 Retina screen plus high resolution raw images and lots of brushing and/or lots of spot healing is a combination that just doesn't work well in Lightroom Classic.

Turning off the GPU will probably speed up the spot healing and brushing, but will likely cause other things to be slow.

I am not aware of any way to make this a combination that works well together. Some other things to try:

  • Brushing and or spot healing should be the next to last editing step; then transforms and lens corrections are the last step
  • Do the brushing in Photoshop
