Question

Lightroom Renames Files, then doesn't remember the new filenames

This is the second time it's happened and has caused HOURS of lost work. Here's what happens:

1) An entire shoot from a single folder is edited
2) All raw files are renamed

3) Lr freezes, so I close and restart the program
4) The raw files are renamed apporpriately in the folder but NOT in the catalog

5) Lr cannot 'Locate' the file because the catalog name and the new actual name are different.

So NOW I have to go to each file individually and 'locate' the file?

It's done this two times now--why?

see: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html

Also, probably time to give Adobe a chat, a call.

I believe you are right. Thanks for all your insight.

It has occured in the last two shoots and occurs to only one folder of images in that catalog

What if you create (in LrC) a new folder, move the misbehaving images to that new folder, and test?

All hard drives are functional

But did you test them ?

To your first question, the partially successful workaround was to take all the raw images that got copied to another drive on import and plug those into the same folder. So at that point there was one copy of the renamed files that Lr didn't recognize and a duplicate with the original name. So Lr was able to find about 50% of those.

fresh install of graphics driver happening now...

3) Lr freezes, so I close and restart the program

  1. What is the maximum amount of time you have allowed LrC to stay in that state before closing?
  2. How do you close?

update: forcing LrC to close, should not be the issue per: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/lightroom-classic-is-frozen/idc-p/12360445#M15414

Graphics Processor Info:
DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (26.21.14.4253)

It is not likely that this is the cause of your problem. IMO zero % possibility of that.

But

GPU driver v442.53, way out of date, current per NVIDIAa is v471.96, when you update, select custom for install option, that will force a clean install. You should have a NVIDIA app called GeForce Experience to do that.

That's interesting...because I intentionally update that driver (through Windows) every few weeks. I wonder why it wasn't sticking...?  I'll do it again through GeForce.

Updating non MS items that way is a no go. That has not worked for years.

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs.

  • Does this occur all the time now?
  • Does this occur if using a different catalog?
  • Have you optimized the catalog?
  • Have you reset the preferences?
  • Have you checked the hard drive the catalog is on?
  • Have you checked the hard drive the photos are on?

and what about anything else in (ref 1)

It has occured in the last two shoots and occurs to only one folder of images in that catalog.

It hasn't occured in other catalogs...yet

Yes, catalog is optimized, preferences were reset recently

All hard drives are functional

Thanks for the clarifiying questions.

You don't say what OS you're on, but it is possible to batch rename the files back to the Lightroom expected names quicker than linking each file. I'd be more concerned about finding the cause of the crash to prevent this in the first place.

1. Workflow inquiry

All raw files are renamed

You are renaming the photos using LrC, correct?

2. What if inquiry

If you rename the photos during import, does it freeze up?

Yes, photos are renamed within Lr.

I don't rename on import as it screws up my ability to sort a shoot with multiple cameras and sync up capture time in the metadata.
