Lightroom's denoise works better with GPU acceleration off

Hi,

I know my graphic card is not top one (Quadro M2000 4GB RAM), but it takes minutes for Denoise tool to complete. I have PC with i9 10th gen and 32GB of RAM, so it is not a slowest configuration. I tried different settings in "Performance" tab and tried to denoise the same RAW file with different settings and there is something weird:

- both with full GPU acceleration and auto it took 11 minutes,

- with acceleration turned off it was complete after 4 minutes.

What's going on? In my opinion it should be faster with acceleration, but it's nor. I've been looking at GPU and CPU utilization during denoise and in both cases GPU was utilized in 100%, CPU just a bit.

Started to think about changing graphic card, but the problem is that my Lenovo v50t has small power supply and even don't remember if I have plug for external power of graphic card. So my choice is rather small and is limited to these cards that are powered directly by PCI-e, so 75W. I'm considering RTX A2000 6GB, in benchmarks it is over 240% better than Quadro M2000, but I can't find any information about experiences with this card. I'm in doubts.

    Small update. I've replaced Quadro M2000 4GB with RTX A2000 6GB. Significant improvement. Files that were denoised previously in 10+ minutes, now are ready after 20-25 seconds :). Problem solved 🙂

    That's very strange. Normally, LR ignores the setting of Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor and always uses the GPU for all of its AI commands (denoise, masking, lens blur), which makes troubleshooting harder than it needs to be:

    Your observation of GPU and CPU utilization is consistent with that expectation, though the difference in execution times is not!

      Well, I don't get why you find this situation strange.

      GPU have some amount of computational power.

      As you wrote - Denoise always runs on GPU no matter the settings.

      So with GPU acceleration disabled only Denoise consumes computational power of GPU, and with GPU acceleration enabled that same computetional power will be shared by Denoise and other things that may be running in parallel (export, preview generation and who know what else).
      But I would agree that the difference is quite dramatic though.

        I tried it with GPU on and off and got exactly identical timings, down to the second.

         

        (RTX 3060, 34 seconds on a 60 MP file).

         

        As noted above, Denoise uses the GPU regardless. Something else must be going on in your case.

          Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut out as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs and it takes up vast amounts of scroll space making the reply less readable and less likely that others will bother with your post.

            That driver (537.99) is from Dec 7, but there's a new one (538.15) from three days ago:

            Likely it won't make a difference to what you're observing, but it's always good hygiene to be on the latest Studio or Production Branch driver. (Note there's a typo in the version description that mentions "New Feature Branch Driver", but in fact it's a Production Branch driver.)

              1. Was this experiment with the same photo?
              2. If it was, how does the experiment behave if you add a third step, that is turning use GPU back on, and trying again?

               

              /Followup/ OP stated (it may not be immediately clear, included at top of Sys Info reply) that this was attempted, and no change.

              1. Yes, it was exactly the same RAW, virtual copy of original, no additional corrections.

              2. I'll try it later, when I'm back home, but I don't expect that it would change anything. I'll also post information you've requested in other post.
