Question

Lightroom STILL crashing without a crash report when automatic writing metadata to XMP is selected

This specifically IS bugged, and has been for probably a year or two now since I've seen others and me posting about it with no fixes.

The first 4-5 years using LR, never had crashing issues and then random crashes with no crash reports.

I report it to Adobe and just get the response, we don't see a crash report on the account....where I reply, duh, I already told you that......

Then find another post someone pin pointing it to the catalog pref. automatic writing metadata to XMP is the culprit.   So I try and turn it off and just manually select all the files and constantly save on my own, and that worked.  No crashes.....try turn it back on, instantly either on load up, or after switching every 5-10 photos, crash, no crash report, just as if someone went to task manager and end task.

Again, tell Adobe that.....well we don't see a crash report....again, already stated that, please read the post....

So I keep it off, not a single crash since......then recently see in an update either this last one or the one before last, that Adobe finally addressed an issue with automatic writing metadata to xmp crashes.  I didn't trust it because....Adobe.....so I waited.  Then today finally thought well I might as well check....

VERY first thing loading up, crash.

When is this issue going to actually be addressed?

Looking this time......it actually shows an Adobe Lightroom crash report.....which is interesting, because nothing popped up, but this is a good sign at least.  It says it was sent, so maybe the update at least addressed a no report issue when metadata crashes happen?

Interesting though that it has two reports, one yesterday, which it didn't crash yesterday, and one today 8 hours in the future......and the last one says video toolkit error.......which sounds odd in Lightroom being it's a photo app?

Unless this is a new crash error that very coincidentally happened only when I checked that option back on?

Hi @Thai5C65!

Just checking in to see if you're still running into that issue. Let me know when you get a chance!
Thanks so much,
Alek

Hi @Aleke , sorry I still have this book marked to get back to.  I have since had that option turned off and didn't get a chance or remember to turn it back on to test it since this post because I needed to get work done uninterrupted.  I will turn it back on today and see.   Thanks for remembering and sorry took so long for me to get back after I posted this.

It's always been an issue for a few years now and when I have the option turned off, there are no random crashes except the occassional overload it tends to do sometimes when it thinks it gets bogged down even when resources are available, but those are not often and expected to happen occassionally.

The other reason I had it turned off was it was making photoshop annoy me every single time I would save because it would see an update and keep asking me if I'm sure I want to save because LR updated the metadata while I am in photoshop and doesn't know if it should overrite it or not, when it's pretty obvious I want it to save.   Got annoyed it asking every single time when I'm constantly saving in event random shut down it does or power glitch that happens very often in Vegas's weak power grid every time it gets a little windy.

But will turn it back on today and see if that last time I tested it after updating when the patch notes said it "fixed" metadata writing crashes and it very quickly crashed without warning or pop up again was just very cooincidental or the same issue.

Hi @Thai5C65, thanks for sharing your experience with Lightroom unexpectedly quitting. Let's try to figure this out! To better help you with this issue, we would like a few more details. Can you send your system information, a screen recording of your issue, and a numbered list of the exact steps needed to replicate the issue? You can find your system information by going to Help > System Info, copying and pasting it into a text file, and attaching it here. Thanks! ^CH
