Question

Lightroom won't import properly

I exported a bunch of existing .PSDs from Lightroom to a new folder as JPGs - thus to my way of thinking they are new files as they have the same names but a different extension. I went to import these new files into Lightroom and it won't let me (the files from the newly created folder are greyed out.) The reason I am doing this is because I am creating a presentation in Keynote and I want them all sized the same and I want to be able to select the images in LR and drag them into Keynote. If I can't import the new JPGs I can't do that. Working out of a Collection isn't an option because they are all very large .PSDs that makes Keynote gag.

Any thoughts on how to get around this?

Open the Export Dialog window, Export button. Look at the top section, "Export To Location". Is the Add to This Catalog option checked?

If it is then when you export to that folder, however it has been created, those images are automatically being added into the LR catalog.

More than likely you are working from a the Previous Import link in the "Catalog" section of the left hand panel and you are not seeing the folder being created or the images added to that folder.

To get around this always work from the "Folders" section instead of the Previous Import link.

Add to this Catalog is not checked and I was working from the Folders Section.

I have added several images to the folder in the same manner that I did the first ones and but they all require an import as I would expect. Exact same process - literally nothing changed but the end result. Going to do some more testing to see what happens.

    I cannot follow your workflow.

I believe you can make your workflow simpler. (Import to the catalog can be automatic)

    1)  Export any photo in the library to a JPG and set the folder destination in the Export dialog-

    2)   If you want these "exported" JPGs to appear in your catalog- just set the "Add to this Catalog" option in the Export:

When I restarted LR, the new folder showed up but the question now is why? LR created it in the Catalog with no input from me and seems to have imported the JPG versions automatically.  Does this mean that LR is now tracking where files are moved to when moved with Finder and not within LR?

    Lightroom does not do this.

That's what I thought, so why is it doing it? I did nothing but I have a Folder and 145 jpg images in it now showing in my Catalog that I have not imported. Same type of thing happened recently. Went to show someone how to import and put a bunch of existing files on a thumb drive. Created a new folder and copied the images into the new folder and LR wouldn't let me import them and flagged them as already imported. Why? They were in a different folder, they should be treated as new images as their location is different than it was.

I'm not against LR becoming smarter about imports, but I haven't seen mention that the fundamental tracking system has changed but I may have missed it.

If the images are grey in the Import dialog box, and when you hover your mouse over one of the gray images you see a box that says the Image has already been imported then ... my conclusion is ... the image has already been imported.

I don't use Keynote, and I was not aware that you could drag photos from Lightroom into Keynote, I didn't think this works from Lightroom to any software ... however, why can't you drag the image from the folder (in your operating system) to Keynote?

You can drag from LR to Keynote and it works very well. The reason to use LR is that you can see the images and tweak it if needed.

Seems like a strange choice, however. An image dragged from Lightroom wouldn't have the adjustments applied, would it? The adjustments are simply stored in the catalog.
