Limits in number of preset groups?

I cluster and group my presets in Lightroom Classic 14.2. Beyond a certain number of groups, it won't import more presets and tells me it's running out of groups. When I physically remove groups of presets from the preset folder (Windows Explorer), I am able to import new groups of presets. But when I copy back the presets I had removed, Lightroom won't start up again. I also noticed that some of the presets that were in the group that failed the first time are not visible in Lightroom. Trying to import them again results in the message that they were already imported.

Anyone else experienced something similar?

I was unable to reproduce the issue. And I don't think it had anything to do with the number of lines as I keep my groups collapsed, and I only have about 300 of them.

I imported several new groups with presets over the weekend without a hitch. I even restored the groups of presets I had deleted because of this issue, so it seems that some hiccup had thrown Lightroom off before. I cannot remember the exact error message. All I remember was that it had something to do with the number of groups exceeding a limit, or something similar.

So almost everything is well. Except that the two groups I was importing as the hiccup occurred are missing a few of the adaptive presets. And yes, I tested it with various stills that the presets have been designed for. When I try to reimport them, Lightroom tells me they have already been imported. I tried deleting the presets from the ImportedSettings folder and reimport them after restarting Lightroom. That didn't work, I had to copy them back in manually. I deleted the preset catalog files (Index_*.dat) from the Settings folder and restarted Lightroom to force Lightroom to rebuild the preset catalog. No effect.

Any suggestions?

"Beyond a certain number of groups,"

1. What's that number?

2. About how many total presets do you have?

3. Please post a full-resolution screenshot (not a phone pic) of the error message. I've never seen this issue reported before.

Hi John, I'll send in a picture of the error message later. It is bound to pop up again as I will install more presets over the weekend. For now, I will try to answer your other questions.
I currently have defined 20 clusters (including the ones standard available), 306 groups, and 5944 presets and profiles. I added a screenshot that shows part of the list of clusters and groups, just to give you an idea.

A longstanding bug in Windows LR limits the presets, keywords, collections, and folder panels to 1500 - 3200 lines (depending on your display settings). When LR tries to display more lines than that, it starts doing all sorts of screwy things:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-windows-panel-is-limited-to-1600-items-folders-keywords-etc/idc-p/12893318/

That could account for some of what you are seeing -- when you try to import a group, I think by default it will be expanded rather than collapsed, so LR may then try to display too many lines, and you might not see the newly imported presets.

I've never seen any limits imposed on groups, though, so if/when you see the error message again, send a screenshot.
