Question

Lost face data

Hi,

I have been going through my photo collection adding face tags - this shows up in keyword tags which are also shown as named regions on the photo.

Lightroom is set to auto save metadata. (Edit -Catalog Settings - Metadata - Automatically write changes to XMP ticked).

I have found that if, at a later date, I go back to a photo, all the face names are still there as keyword tags but the face 'regions' on the photo can be randomly lost: some photos have a full set of face regions while other photos only have some of the face regions.

I have sent photo files to my iPhone which has an app called ExifWizPro which lists all the metatdata, including 'Regions'. This confirms all Keywords are present but only some of the Regions. If I re-add the face tags using Lightroom (the name keyword tags remain unchanged, not duplicated), and then re-resend the photo file to my iPhone, ExifWizPro shows more face regions are present, but not always all of them.

The ExfWizPro Metatada list includes:  RegionList - height, type (Face), width, X & Y co-ordinates. (I assume this data is in the photo file if Lightroom shows a box around faces - however I do not know how to view this actual metadata in Lightroom).

It has been/continues to be a huge task to add face tags to photos and it is bitterly disappointing that metadata is being lost.

I would be grateful for any advice as to avoid this problem happening and, even better, getting the face regions back on all my (1000's of) photos without having to individually re-add them to each photo.

(the attached file shows a screenshot of EzifWizPro).

All the best

    Hi John,

I had not realised that the catalogue would act as a backup if the file data became altered so I think you are correct – there could be a bug. My only doubt is that other more experienced users would have been affected as well – this, perhaps sadly,  makes it more likely that it is me at fault. I have been scanning in old photos for some years using Adobe Elements which does not save all the metadata to the file. When I started using Lightroom, I thought I had re-catalogued all my photos using Lightroom: perhaps I missed some !

I will check photos that have been scanned in more recently (ie when I already had Lightroom) and see if the fault recurs.

    Thanks for your insight.

    All the best.

Do you mean that when you select that photo and do View > Loupe, and then click "x named people" in the toolbar at the bottom, some of the face rectangles no longer appear? If so, then this issue is independent of how LR writes metadata back to photos.  LR stores face information, like other metadata, in the LR catalog, and face information shouldn't disappear from the catalog unless you explicitly delete a face rectangle.

This smells like a bug, and you should file a bug report in the official Adobe feedback forum, where Adobe wants all bugs reported: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/categories/photoshop_family_photoshop_lightroom. (This is a user-to-user forum, and product developers rarely participate here.)

Thanks for getting back again. I am not sure what you mean. ExifWizPro only reads metatdata that is in a file - I add all the metadata using lightroom.

And  lightroom is  non destructive, meaning for ny metadataa including keywords you add, do not get ctualyy placed  in  the  original file. Some people keep that sidecar xmp file as you are to get around this, so the photo and the sidecar get opened  up, and if the app on the other end is xmp save, it combines the two.

However, if in lightroom you export the  photo, you get a new file with the edits including metadata included

Hi, regarding your most recent post, this might be the explanationto the problem.

Sorry, I pressed return before I meant to. I think I understand your point you are making. I regularly back up 'the catalogue' but have always assumed that the metadata is saved into the original file. When I was initially choosing a progrm to catalogue my photos, several used 'side-cars'so I avoided these. I can't remember exactly, but I understood Lightroom could be set not to use a side-car file but use embedded metadata instead. I thouht I had set this up but can't remember how

Second up, Face Rec in Lightroom.

    See: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/face-recognition.html

Now, I do not think Lightroom will use the extra metadata you placed into the images on your phone.

And unless your phone also reads the xmp file and is xmp savy, or is lightroom savy, it may not be showing you your lightroom metadata edits, unless you are talking about an exported image.

Thanks for that: I have never used plug-ins before but will give this one a try.

First up, an easy one, Lightroom does not show all metadata. Images have a lot more metadata than what lightroom shows.

To see more metadata when using lightroom, you do not need to go back to your phone. A simple plug-in exists to show the metadata. Jeffrey Friedl's Bloghas several nice plug-ins. Including Mettadata Viwer.:
