I am using LR 8.1 CC with the latest version of Win 10 on a fast PC. Since the last upgrade the program works exceedingly slow and every time I click on anything, an image, or to change modules, to rename ... anything, the window goes white and the spinning wheel of death appears for 30 seconds to a minute. It then clears up and I can continue. However, when selecting several images, after about the third it hangs again (even after having cleared the first time).
Finally, I am using the latest version of Photoshop CC on the same PC without experiencing this problem.
I am using LR 7.4 CC on a Mac and do not experience this problem.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions other than turning off face recognition?
Thank you.

Check your GPU for a driver update, yours looks to be two years out of date.
might nit fix anything, but updated drivers is critical.

David, thank you for all your great responses. I appreciate the suggestion to update the GPU driver ... I realize this is outside of Adobe, but can you tell me how to do that?
I turned off the Windows Defender firewall settings.
I did sign in and sign out.
I logged into adobe.com and have experienced no issues navigating around the site or accessing and changing account information.
Synchronizing with Face Detection is turned off.
I thought perhaps my HD needed optimizing so I did that. I also deleted approximately 80GB of programs, images, etc. off the HD.
The problem still persists.
Any further suggestions?

It doesn't look like above question was answered.
Open Lightroom Preferences from Edit menu and switch to Performance tab as shown below.
If above doesn't help then try resetting the preferences as described in Method 1 at How to set Lightroom Classic CC preferences

My mistake. Following your instructions, I just realized I am using Lightroom Classic CC, not LR CC.

2. On the problem child computer, bring up the Adobe Creative a Cloud Desktop application
if you are not signed in, do so, then sign out, followed by signing back in. Watch for errors. See if Lightroom behaves.
if you were already signed in, we’ll sign out, sign in, watch for errors, See if Lightroom behaves.

go to Adobe.com, sign in, bring up manage your account, watch for errors. This is just a diagnostic to see if your account has an issue with a Adobe Server (other than this forum)
Resolve connection errors with Adobe Creative Cloud and Creative Suite applications

4. Also, temporarily stop your antivirus and your firewall as a diagnostic in case either one is fouling this up

dj_paige. Thank you for the suggestion. But, as you can see, I'm not using LR CC. It is not enabled on any of my devices. I did check, however, and the message is that LR CC is not synched.
The problem I am having still persists and I'm looking forward to more ideas from you!

In LR, bring up Catalog Settings, open the File Handeling tab. Preview CACHE size, and quality. Take a screenshot and post in reply.

That is probably too high, oh I understand it is matching your monitors current resolution. You might want to decrease the resolution you are running at.
not at a pc so a bit lacking in tools.
experiment with what lower values you can run at, try them out.
mind you, that catalog Setting is for previews the library module uses, not develop, and to cut down how huge the developreviews get, requires decreasing the resolution you are runnung.

I think we're getting somewhere. I made the changes you suggested and then many of the changes in the links you sent. These included lowering resolution, etc. After rebooting it appears to be working faster. Let me play with it a while and let you know. But I think you've got it.

I apologize for taking so long to get back to this. Unfortunately, I have to make a living! 🙂
I have done everything suggested, including lowering the resolution of my screen, but the problem still persists. I would think it was my computer except that Photoshop CC works perfectly. If the computer were causing LR to run slow then one would expect PS to be crashing - it's not.
Do you have any more suggestions? Is there any way to get in touch with Adobe tech support?

This doesn't logically follow. Lightroom can be slow in certain instances because it is different software than Photoshop, and one can be slow while the other can be fast.
Having a 4K or larger monitor can cause slowness in Lightroom. Turning on the Graphics Processor use is one way to speed it up, but if you are doing lots of local adjustments, this will slow down the local adjustments, and in my opinion, there is no speedy way to have Lightroom handle local adjustments with a 4K or larger monitor.

Greetings, DJ. Thank you again for keeping at this with me.
As I mentioned previously, all it takes is to Ctrl-click on two or more images to cause the white screen and the wheel of death to appear for 30 seconds to a minute. Highlighting a single image and clicking on Develop causes the same result. Clicking on Auto WB or Auto Tone, etc. does the same. Clicking on Import takes at least a minute to bring up the dialog box. Exporting 10 images from DNG to JPEG can take 3 to 5 minutes.
This isn't sporadic, it's every single time. Trying to be productive under these circumstances is impossible.
This all began after the last update (or the one just before that, I don't remember). That, too, could just be coincidental. And, if as you surmise, it's not the computer, then it's LR.
Do you know how to get in touch with Adobe tech support? I have been using and recommending to my students, LR since v. 1.0 and would hate to have to dump it for ON1 Software or Exposure 3. That's not a threat, that's just desperation at this point.

Have you done local adjustments with a 4K or larger monitor?

Also, I tried your suggestion and reduced the screen resolution to 1080. This appeared to help slightly, but not enough to maintain that low a resolution.

Yes, but I have been using this 4K monitor with the same WIN computer for almost 2 years. The slowdown just began in the last month or so.

What resolution are you running that monitor at?
3840x2160? Might be to high
more if an issue at 4K, defiantly an issue at 5K.
reduce that down probably, or do not show full screen.
