LR Classic 12.4 Camera Raw 15.4 - Sigma fp files' aspect ratio not respected/shown upon import

Explorer ,
Jul 21, 2023 Jul 21, 2023

ENVIRONMENT

Sigma fp (Bayer sensor): Firmware 5.00 (current) updated months ago and before LRC 12.4

Hardware: Intel iMac 2020.

OSX: Monterey 12.6.7 (current).

Adobe software: LR Classic 12.4 and Camera Raw 15.4.

PROBLEM

After moving to LRC 12.4 upon importing Sigma fp files that were shot with a non 3:2 aspect ratio (like 21:9) the used aspect ratio is no longer shown/respected - it used to be semi blanked out.

The 21:9 ratio is visible in the import dialogue of LRC (3:2 area displayed but with the relevant parts shown in black), but is then ignored as imported photo always shown in 3:2 aspect ratio.

In Develop/Crop & Straighten: Original=As Shot.

In the Library module/Metadata/DNG the preview dimensions are given as 6000x2576 which matches 21:9.

Any and all aspect ratio is still functioning as expected in Sigma Photo Pro 6.8.3 (but after many years usage I am allergic to SPP…).

SOLUTION?

Adobe: What have you changed? How can I get back to LRC showing the files correctly?

INPUT/SOLUTIONS

Are all appreciated - so thanks in advanced.

/Xpanded.

Sigma in Japan has confirmed they can reproduce the error. How can I make support take up this issue? Trying to go through adobe's help page ends up in a trap of AI (abnormal insufficiency).

Do you have a copy of Camera Raw and Photoshop installed? If yes, then please open the file into Photoshop hosted Camera Raw to check whether the aspect ratio is honoured or not, and let us know what you find

Thanks for the feedback

@Rikk Flohr: Photography  You'll probably need to check with Camera Raw team whether this is a bug.

Is it possible to share with us a file that exhibits the issue?

Not as an attachment - the system writes:

Correct the highlighted errors and try again.

  • The attachment's _fp00761.dng content type (image/x-adobe-dng) does not match its file extension and has been removed.

File size is only 32.1 MB, so it shouldn't be too big. Any other way I can forward it to you?

I receive an error message when I attempt a download.  Can you make sure the upload finished and that you can download the file?  If you can, can you verify that you've provided the public link?

Now I get an error message when uploading (which is Adobe's native .DNG format) that filetype is not supported. I'm not allowed to have dropbox etc. on my computer for security reasons. A bit stuck here.

I think the best way forward is for you to ask your Camera Raw Group for the raw files they successfully (or not?) tested against before releasing the latest Camera Raw.

Zip the file first and reupload it.

The Camera Raw team is the group requesting your file.

Can you post a screenshot showing where you are getting this message?

You need to share via Creative Cloud folders - not post in the forums as an attachment.

I'm sorry - I don't have time for this. The error has hereby been reported to Adobe. Please fix. The Camera Raw team can use the files they tested up against before releasing the newest version/release. I will inform Sigma that I will do not more regarding this.

We could really use your file to proceed with an investigation.  You should be able to drag it into your Creative Cloud folder in Finder and then share a link to that from https://assets.adobe.com/files

I am still seeing this behavior in Lightroom Classic 13.2 (Camera Raw 16.2). The attached file was shot with a 7:6 aspect ratio (in a portrait orientation), but Lightroom Classic is showing the photo in a 3:2 aspect ratio. I'm hoping the attachment gets through so that you can use it to troubleshoot. @Rikk Flohr: Photography - can you help?

It seems like the attachment did not go through. I'll try linking to the file on Google Drive.

This is a pretty old thread that dead-ended on an information request.  Can you include up-to-date details specific to your failure:

  • LrC Version Number
  • OS Version Number
  • Camera Model
  • Step-by-step instructions for reproduction

  • Lightroom Classic version: 13.2 (Camera Raw 16.2)
  • OS: macOS Sonoma 14.1.2
  • Camera: Sigma fp (firmware version 5.0.0)
  • Steps to reproduce
    • Set aspect ratio in camera to 7:6.
    • Set photo type to DNG raw.
    • Take photo.
    • Import photo into Lightroom.
    • Observe that photo is displayed in 3:2 aspect ratio, not the 7:6 aspect ratio with which the photo was taken.

The DNG raw file that I uploaded to Google Drive in a previous reply in this thread has an example of such a photo. Lightroom Classic shows the photo in an aspect ratio of 3:2, not 7:6 as expected. Interestingly, clicking the link to the file on Google Drive renders the photo properly in 7:6 in by Safari browser (version 17.1.2) under macOS.

LATEST

Thank you for the file. I was able to confirm this is expected behavior.

Explanation:

The SIGMA fp and fp L (similar model) cameras have never supported the DefaultUserCrop DNG tag, which would allow DNGs to be cropped (but recoverable edges) the same as in-camera JPEGs at various aspect ratios. The camera crops JPEGs but does not necessarily crop the DNGs the same way."
