LR Classic high CPU Usage

Explorer ,
Dec 13, 2017 Dec 13, 2017

Since updating to LR Classic, whenever I Import or Export I get a warning that Lightroom is causing high CPU usage.  I NEVER got that before upgrading. Along with that, import and export is painfully slow. I posted a note on that a few days ago. I'm running an Intel i7-6700K 4GHz Skylake processor so I know it''s not a CPU capacity issue, Adobe did something that needs to be found and fixed.

One of the performance enhancements introduced in Lr Classic was to use as many cores as possible when importing images into the catalog.

If you're seeing slow imports then it would be important that the engineering team knows what size of preview is being built during import, and whether your converting to DNG on import. Also, helps to include details of OS and amount of installed ram

Import should be super fast on your system.

I'm not sure what you mean by import as JPG. Do you mean the originals are JPG files?

Are the files being imported from the camera/card reader or direct from disk?

Are you using USB 2 or 3?

Can you try an alternative import method. That is, if you normally copy from memory card then try copying the images to disk then use 'Add' in port window.

Also, worth checking whether stopping smart preview building during import as I recall some mention elsewhere that this wasn't working as expected in Win 10

Ian,

Correction, I import the RAW file, not .jpg, sorry for the confusion.  Import off of a USB 3 card reader.  The Use Smart Preview box unchecked.

I don't think I should have to add a step on import by copying the files from the card to the disk and then importing. I never had this issue prior to LR Classic and as you state, this computer is lightning fast an built specifically for this type of work.

Also, I get the same High CPU Usage by Lightroom message when I export, regardless of whether I export to my hard drive or to my website via plugin.

I have also found that there is now a delay in the Develop module when using the sliders, any slider. There is about a half second lag between when I move the slider and when I see the effect on the image. I never had that happen prior to the LR Classic upgrade.

I suggested the alternative import procedure in order that we could rule out some potential reasons for what your experiencing.

In that case, I think you would be advised to check to see what other apps/services are running in background.

The only other program running in the background it my email client.  In the past I've had LR and PS running at the same time a  bunch of other things and again, never had either of these problems until LR Classic upgrade.  I have less running in the background than normal to see if that was a problem and it clearly is not.

I understand trying an alternate import method but for that I'll have to wait until tomorrow when I finish a house photo shoot and have a few hundred images to import.  And as an added note, it doesn't appear to matter whether I'm import 5 images or 500. Same with the slow export issue.
