Question

LR5 and BigSur 11

I have Lightroom5 on my 2013 MacBook Pro which was working fine until some Mac OS update was done. Now I am running BigSur 11 and LR5 does not work. When I insert SD card and go to "import photos", no preview is generated in LR and if I opt to import, waiting for overnight also does not import a single photo. It is quite frustrating and I do not wish to go to "Cloud or online service". Would appreciate help if anyone else has solution. Thanks,

Instead of trying to make an obsolete, unsupported version work (and risking problems including data loss) its probably best to subscribe to the current, compatible version.

I would have done that but avoiding to pay monthly 15$ as my usage is few times a year.

Have you ensured that LR5 has access to "Files & Folders" in the System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Privacy tab? If not, select the Files and Folders item from the left-hand window after selecting the Privacy tab, then unlock the right-hand panel (click on the lock icon at the bottom of then panel) and then add Lightroom 5 to all items. Then try the import again.

For the record, LR5 does work on both my MBP running Big Sur (11.7.2) and my M1 Mac Mini running Monterey (12.6), although as expected there will be some issues. I just tested import from an SD card (Jpeg only, Raw images from my cameras are not supported under LR5) and while the import was successful there were no previews in the import window and I was unable to select any destination other than on the system SSD. But it did work.

I don't believe there is an Adobe solution that doesn't involve upgrading to the latest subscription version. You may want to read https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/lightroom-cc/kb/macos-big-sur-compatibility.html

Ian, that article is just wrong. I have recently successfully installed both LR4 and LR5 on my M1 Mac Mini (Monterey), and this morning I've just installed them both on my old 2013 MBP running Big Sur. The article mentions 32-bit licensing components, but I believe that only applies to LR6/CC2015 and it's the changed activation procedure in that version which is likely the 32-bit component. LR4 and LR5 have standard serial number activation, which would appear to be 64-bit along with the actual program code.

Hi @Jim Wilde.

That particular article relates to Lightroom (Cloud) - formerly Lightroom CC.

I think you're saying that the OP should be able to successfully install and run LR5 (now known as Classic) on Big Sur although there may be some unexpected behaviour.
