LrC extremely slow after upgrading from 13.smth to 14.0.1

Hello. My Lightroom Classic has become very slow after upgrading to 14.0.1. Every edit takes more time than before the update. And there are weird scratching noises coming from my laptop when I make edits. This wasn't happening before the update to 14.0.1 (from 13. something).

Brush masking was hit the hardest and is a pain to use.

This update impeded my work greatly, LrC worked perfectly on my rig.

When can we can expect a more stable and efficietn release?

Similar here but with differences - HP, Intel i9, 32 MB RAM Windows 11 - noticed a marked change on changing from Lightroom Classic version 13 to 14, persists into 14.1.1.   No problems in running verstion 13, and these cannot be processor/memory related issues:  takes 50 seconds just to bring up contextual menu with right click (usually in in front of the other software I have turned to while I wait).  Auto function in Basic edit is so slow as to be unusable, "create virtual copy" takes about 2 minutes, sometimes on the wrong image as I moved on while waiting.  "Add to collection" likewise takes about 2 minutes.  Image edits are not saved when returning to Grid from Develop.  "Create preset" does not always save new preset.  But complex image processing, masking etc. (when it catches up to doing it) seem to run at normal speed.   I also notice is that for the first minute after opening, things run OK, but then the hanging up starts.  And when I give up and shut down Lightroom, all the "hanging" processes suddenly get done.  Is there some basic change in settings needed to fix this or is at a software bug?  I have a lot of images catalogued and keyworded, cannot afford the time to change to other software.

That's really bad @Simon J Smith, I'm more in the seconds delay. 😕😕
Some say it could be the anti virus, are you running Norton as well?

Thanks for replying and for the suggestion.  I have McAfee antivirus software running - would that be able to affect Lightroom's operation?   It seems to be more concerned with e-mails and websites, but sorry, I'm not that familiar with how things cross over.  But whatever the case, it didn't appear to slow down version 13.  I had been waiting to see if the problem would be resolved with upgrading from 14.0.1 to 14.1.1 - but it appears not to be.

Same issue here, RTX 4070, i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz, 32.0 GB RAM, 2TB SSD as main drive.

In my case though, LrC has been slow for a long time. Even for simple actions sometimes such as clicking on a picture for selection (in Grid mode); it takes time for the picture to become "highlighted" to show selection was taken. It is painful when selecting pictures here and there in the grid...

Are the slowness issues showing up only for Windows users?

Check to see if your anti-virus settings exclude LrC, PS and all your image files.

Hello Ken, do you mean exempt the applications from the data protection service? (running Norton antivirus)

Or exempt file types from the data protection service?

I just selected Enable HRD in library in settings and it fixed the issue.

I've tried so many things, but nothing has worked up to now. I'm so glad to have finally found a solution that works! Thanks a lot.

I suggest you monitor CPU and GPU usage; maybe you will notice that the GPU is doing nothing and the CPU is running hard.... so that is why it is slow; LrC might be broken in terms of acceleration.

I checked, and it's using 5% GPU and 12% CPU. I also reset the performance settings to Auto and Custom, but there's no difference. The update seems to have broken something.

You may want to search the Internet on the words "laptop screeching noise"

Bringing up Google, and the new AI Overview shows:

____________________________________________________________

"A laptop might make a screeching noise for a few reasons, including:

  • Overheating: When a laptop gets too hot, the cooling system works harder to prevent it from overheating, which can cause the fan to spin faster and make more noise.

  • Dust accumulation: Dust can clog vents and impede airflow, causing the fan to work harder and make more noise.

  • Faulty fan: The fan itself might be broken.

  • High CPU usage: The control processing unit (CPU) might be being used too much.

  • Coil whine: Solid state drives (SSDs) can produce a high-pitched coil whine because of the transformers inside them. This is caused by electrical wiring vibrating, and it's usually more noticeable at higher frame rates.

To reduce fan noise, you can try: Cleaning the fan and vents, Reducing CPU usage, and Replacing the fan if necessary."

So is LrC causing the latter two?

Same issue here, RTX 3070, Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10850K CPU @ 3.60GH, 32.0 GB.  Was fine until the upgrade to 14.0.1

"Wierd screeching noises"  This is a sign of likely hard drive failing. That could also explain the slowness.

Back up everything immediately and get it looked at by a professional shop.

If your computer has an SSD and not a hard drive, the screeching could come from a malfunctioning fan. That would potentially cause the computer to overheat, also something that would slow down the machine.

Thanks for your time Ken. I have an SSD. Since this behavior started immediately after the upgrade from 13.5 to 14.0.1, I have all reasons to believe this is not a hardware issue. LrC runs unbearably slow even when doing low load tasks when the fans are silent, like switching photos in filmstrip - and ironically filmstrip was advertised getting a performance improvement in 14.

On a recent folder of photos, try recreating the previews. Does that help with the time requierd to switch from one image in the filmstrip to the next?
