Missing Photos after 7.2 upgrade

Anyone else having problems with Missing Photos after the 7.2 LR CC Classic upgrade? Never had this problem before but after the upgrade, several times now I've had a photo go "Missing" immediately after editing it. Unfortunately, I have not yet identified a consistent repro scenario - nor can I force it to happen at will. The missing file is generally a DNG or TIF file. Here are some of the cases where it has happened:

  • Round trip edit in Photoshop CC 2018 (latest version), save back to LR as a TIF, make a couple more LR edits - and suddenly the "!" exclamation point shows up in grid view and says the photo is missing. Verified the TIF file is indeed gone from the hard disk.
  • Nested round-trip edits:  LR --> Photoshop --> NIK Color Efex --> Photoshop --> LR. Resulting TIF file goes missing ("!").
  • LR CC iOS on iPhone 7+, snap multiple pictures (saved as DNG) & let them sync back to LR CC Classic 7.2 on desktop.  On desktop, select those pictures, and choose Photo Merge --> Panorama.  Attempt to edit the resulting merged pano DNG file on desktop - file goes missing ("!").

Again, I have not been able to identify consistent repro steps. I've never had this happen prior to the 7.2 upgrade. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough that *something* has definitely changed. The target disk drive where these images are stored is on my local PC - a Windows 10 Storage Space with a simple volume containing 3 x 6TB drives. Just in case this might be a coincidental disk failure - the status of all disks is reported as healthy. There are no disk errors reported in Event Viewer.

The inconsistency makes me think there is some kind of timing or race condition occurring. Possibly as a result of some 7.2 performance optimization?

Just a follow-up on this old thread. I eventually discovered the problem was due to having the Mylio backup/sync app running while performing complex edits in LR Classic (eg, round-trip to PS, photo-merge pano, photo-merge HDR, etc).

This problem has gotten slightly better with recent versions of both LR Classic and Mylio - but it still happens occasionally. To be safe, I still find it necessary to exit Mylio - or at least pause it's syncing - while performing complex edits in LR. Again, this all started with LR Classic 7.2 (the "performance" update) which apparently introduced new file-handling behavior that's incompatible with some background backup/sync apps.

Jimre3, I question why you might be still using Classic v7.2.  The recent release is v9.0. SUrely time you upgraded!

    Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.1.1, Photoshop 27.3.1, ACR 18.1.1, Lightroom 9.0, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.2 .

No worries, I have been updating all along to current versions.  Sorry if my reply wasn't clear. This problem - first introduced in ver 7.2 - has remained, at least thru ver 8.4.1 for sure. I just updated to 9.0, but haven't specifically tested this issue with 9.0 yet.

As I mentioned, I was eventually able to isolate this to having Mylio backup/sync running while editing in LR. Just happened to see this old open thread today, and wanted to provide an update. I worked with the Mylio folks to see what they could figure out - but the best they came up with was to just pause Mylio sync while doing complex LR edits. And that workaround is what I've been doing ever since ver 7.2.

I have not noticed such an anomaly. I just sent an image to Nik Color Efex Pro and it round tripped back to Lightroom Classic CC without a problem. The TIF image displayed as expected.

Thanks. And maybe 19 out of 20 times, it works just fine for me also. That's the frustrating part - not easy to repro the problem.

Thanks for the suggestions.  As I mentioned, there are no disk errors in the Windows Event Viewer logs. Which there would normally be lots of - if this were an actual hard disk problem. Also, scanning my drives' file systems with Chkdsk reports no errors.

Over many years of the same LR/PS workflow, I've never seen this happen prior to the 7.2 upgrade. I'm only seeing it happen now inside LR (and/or roundtrip to PS). I've seen no issues with files disappearing in any other apps.

In any case, it's not a user-initiated deletion attempt - so I would not expect any warning dialogs. It's some kind of occasional under-the-covers glitch, either with LR, the operating system, or (most likely) the interaction between the two.

Are you suggesting an Auto Backup system as a solution, or as a potential cause?  I do have Mylio photo catalog/backup software running in the background, syncing a local replica of all photo files to NAS device on my network.

What are the External editor setting in the LR Preferences?

Not sure why you are saving to the Desktop. That is not a place, folder, I would use to save any images to.

Are you using Save, Ctrl + s, or Save As in PS.

Have you use the built in search feature or after market search program to look for these missing images.

It really sounds like something is moving them.

In one version of Windows there was a feature to Delete icons, files, whatever, from the Desktop folder that Windows determined weren't needed anymore. Usually after a period of time but as we all know any OS can Run Amok at any time.

I have LR set to save Sent To PS images in the same folder as the original and when I send an image to PS the First thing I do is Ctrl + s to save it to the format I have set in the External Editing tab of the LR Preferences.
