P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

Adobe Employee ,
Aug 13, 2024 Aug 13, 2024
This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

Update (Dec 2024):  With the new release, it is no longer necessary to perform Generative Remove Operations prior to Cropping.

Update (August 2025) With the new release, the Generative Remove Engine has been updated.

@Toastman3000: "I'd be so annoyed if they introduce paid credits, it usually takes about 6 or 7 goes before Generative Fill removes objects, not adds in weird objects"

See this article for how to remove objects more reliably:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

When you learn the simple rules in that article, most objects get removed on the first try (as shown by the several dozen problem photos posted in this thread).

Let me start by saying I love this new feature and it speeds up work flow immensely. Especially since I'm someone that uses Lightroom for 90 percent of my editing. Only going to Photoshop for removing unwanted items and distractions. The reginerative AI usually works great for me, however ocassionally it just replaces the selection with a shadow or ghost of it. Also it doesnt seem to matter how many times I refresh or try again it from the beginning. Is anyone else having this issue? I attached an example.

These ghosts are caused by applying Remove on top of an AI mask (e.g. Sky). Do the menu command Settings > Update AI Settings to recompute the mask.

Thanks a million @johnrellis !!!! You are 100 percent correct. I didn't even think about the mask I had applied to the sky. I started working on this photo session set and the first one I did the regenerative AI worked amazing. Then I synced the rest of the settings across the photos and figured I would clean up the distractions later. Came back to edit out the distractions and could not understand the shadows it would leave. Then I would edit other photos and it would work perfectly.

What is going on with this new update? The generative AI remove tool has become TERRIBLE! It never actually removes anything (and YES I am brushing over all shadows too)...it keeps generating new, weird, different items in its place instead of REMOVING it by matching the background. Guess it's back to PS edits again.

@cassandrag56853664: "it keeps generating new, weird, different items in its place instead of REMOVING it by matching the background. "

1. Uncheck Detect Objects (on by default in LR 14) -- it doesn't work well, especially with skinny objects and along the edges of photos.

2. See this article for how to remove objects more reliably:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot), so we and Adobe can see the issue in detail. With nearly every of the several dozen problem photos posted here, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

Almost useless and with lot of errors this AI-Remove-tool. Remove-functions were much better before that.

thanks for your feedback. As I have learned here, some of the problems don´t occur when the removing-tool is NOT applied over a masked area of the pic - helpfull information so far.

If you do apply Remove to an AI mask and see the ghosts, just do the menu command Settings > Update AI Settings to recompute the mask. Often it's a more convenient to apply Remove late in the workflow when you see which objects are important to remove.

Just updated, and the new remove is less effective than last version. Looks like I'll be using PS still.

In using the generative remove, the texture of the stone walkway that is used to fill the removed space clearly has a different texture than the actual stone around it. (Both the gen ai removed version and the original attached)

The replacement patch supplied by Adobe Firefly has a maximum size of 2048 x 2048 pixels. If the selected area in the photo is larger than that, then the replacement patch gets upscaled (and blurry). Your screenshot indicates you're probably replacing an area larger than 2048 x 2048.

There's a related issue with grain (which doesn't seem to be the problem here).  See this post for how to ameliorate the problem with grain:

I'm having issues removing with High ISO Noise pictures, for example in a picture that has a plain background and there's a microphone that I want to delete, Remove will work perfectly with exception of the noise generated by the AI, that's not anything similar to the previouse noise, so the selection of the removal will be noticeable.

Remove doesn't do well matching noise/grain.  See this post for how to ameliorate the problem with grain:

While I generally like "Generative Remove (GR)", I am often frustrated with it's decision. In particular, when I select "remove" I want the selected object removed. Too often GR instead offers something very similar to what I'm trying to eliminate. In other words, instead of "remove", it's giving me "replace with similar". For example, someone has photo-bombed my photo. I want the protuding head/body/face to go away. I try GR and it offers me three new/different heads/bodies/faces!!! So that means it's sampling the object I'm removing when it should instead by sampling the surroundings and figuring a way to extend those surrounds into the area vacated by the removed object.

Increase the size of the brush to overlap the edges a lot. If that does not
work, remove it BEFORE any other editing. It works. Not perfect, but then
nothing is. Good luck.

Hello, I have an error problem: generative elimination has failed. We have detected a problem and we cannot complete your request at this time. Please try again later.
And it does not come out from there. This is from LR because it works fine from PS. I await your response on how to solve it. Thank you.

@teodora.velikov: "Since the new update, the AI remove tool doesn't seem to be doing to work seamlessly."

Generative Remove has always had occasional issues with matching the tone of uniform backgrounds like sky -- it's not new to LR 14:

JohnREllis_0-1732815219188.png

You can often ameliorate this by using the Heal tool on top of the Generative Remove, e.g.

Screenshot 2024-11-28 at 9.35.28 AM.jpg Screenshot 2024-11-28 at 9.35.38 AM.jpg

There are other issues with replacement patches large than 2048 x 2048 and with matching grain.

If this doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot). With nearly every of the several dozen problem photos posted here, we've been able to show how to remove the desired objects.
