P: (GPU) Develop/Edit view & Export artifacts after 14.4.1 Update (AMD-only) (affects Cr, LrC & LrD)

Principiante de comunidad ,

Hi,

Since just now, I've been experiencing a weird bug / crash in Lightroom Classic (on a Mac), where ALL my photos suddenly are fully covered in artefacts in the Develop module.

lightroom develop module.jpg

(Screengrab from the Develop module in Lightroom Classic)

When I check the linked RAW + JPEG source files in Finder, they all seem ok (they don't look corrupted, nor show any artefacts here), meaning the issue is within Lightroom.

raw source file.jpg

(Screengrab from the RAW source file in Finder)

When I export images out of Lightroom (with any setting, edited or even not edited), the artefacts are also present on the export files.

(Screengrab from the exported JPG image)

This problem started occuring soon after I applied the new AI noise reduction feature on just ONE (1) photo.

I already tried:

  • Closing and re-opening Lightroom
  • Shutting down (fully), and restarting the computer after 1 minute
  • Switching the GPU accelrator setting in Lightroom on/off

MY SPECS

  • Lightroom Classic 13.0.1 - Build (202310121438-d2af310c)
  • Macbook Pro 16" - 2019
  • 2,3Ghz 8-core Intel Core i9
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB
  • 32GB 2667MHz DDR4 memory
  • OS Sonoma 14.4.1

Any help would be greatly appreciated, because this makes the whole software unusable....

Thank you!

We've investigated an issue with the macOS 14.4.1 update that affects systems running AMD series GPUs.

The issue manifests as garbling of/artifacts in images in Develop/Edit views and similar artifacts in Exported images.  The problem can afflict Camera Raw (16.2.1), Lightroom Classic (13.2) and Lightroom Desktop (7.2).  Restarting the application should restore your Develop/Edit view and return you to the expected Export results.

The hardware manufacturer's will need to identify the cause

So… i updated MacOS to 14.4.1, and Lightroom Classic to 13.2, now when I export I get digital noise distortion. Has anyone else seen this problem, or what's going on?

Thanks,

JK

I tried LRC 13.1, same results -- meaning there's still noise, but different patterns each time I esport.20240420-9803_2.jpg20240420-9803_3.jpg20240420-9803_4.jpg20240420-9803_5.jpg20240420-9803_6.jpg

It might come back. Apparently since mac os 14.4.1 there is a bug in the driver for certain older video cards that causes the GPU memory to fill up and this has the effect you're seeing here. If you have an older intel Mac that might be the issue.

Does your Mac use an AMD Radeon GPU? If yes, then can you indicate which model and the amount of VRAM.

Thanks to both of you. That does make sence. It's hard to say my 4 year-old computer is old, but yes, I know the drill!

It's a 2019 16" MacBook Pro (8tb/64g ram, 2.4GHz 8-Core Intel i9), AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB / Intel UHD Grapics 630 1536 MB

Things were working fine on MacOS 13.4 I think it was… but did both OS and LRC upgrades at the same time so didn't know which was the culprit.

So far so good, but will post when (if) things start acting up again.

"AMD Radeon Pro 5500M"

That's one of the culprints. Another user reported that setting Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Custom / Use GPU For Display worked around the issue. That's likely to be somewhat faster than setting it to Off.

What mac are you on and did you recently update the OS? There have been reports on similar artefacts after updating to Mac OS 14.4.1 on older intel Macs with ATI GPUs.

Example here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/p-artifacts-on-all-photos/td-p/14563606

Restarting fixes it for some people for a bit. APparently this is due to the GPU running out of memory.

This should help:

  • Go to "preferences" -> "Performance", and under "Camera RAW Cache settings": "Purge cache"
  • Also, under "Performance": set "Use Graphics Processor" to "Custom" instead of "Auto", and then: only "Use GPU for display", and not "Use GPU for image processing".
  • Upgrade to LR 13.2
  • Restart Lightroom

I uploaded a new set of photos on Lightroom today and all the photos uploaded with this weird matrix-looking glitch. I thought it was an issue with the memory card. But I went through old photos and they all have it as well. I reuploaded the photos, I also uninstalled the app but that didn't fix the issue either. The app is the latest version and it is on my macbook pro. Any help would be great!

I've had the same issue with ACR 16.2.1.1767 on macOS 14.4.1 and an AMD Radeon 5300M GPU. I've also had just white previews and resulting Enhanced DNGs. Its intermittent at this point.

Thanks for the info.

Lightroom 7.2 cloud-based on my Mac recently began showing a corrupted photo screen for each "full-screen" photo within the Lightroom app, but photos only showed as corrupted after about 200 normal photos. Corrupted Lightroom screen is isolated to the program, rest of the Mac screen operated as normal. This began a couples months ago and my MacBook is updated, Lightroom is updated, so I thought maybe the troulbe was that I had been over-doing the upload photo amount, creating a slow upload/refresh. Emptied cache, refreshed all, restarted machine, still the same results. Anyone have the same issue and what was your resolution? Screenshot 2024-04-30 at 11.07.28 AM.png

I'm having an issue where theres this weird glitch/noise on top of my photos. I've tried re-importing, closing the software and reopening. The thumbnails show up regularly on the filmstrip previewer at the bottom. I've included two screenshots of example photos - is this just a setting I'm missing or is there a bug/is somthing corrupted? This appears to be happening to all my photos when they load in, including old photos that I have had in lightroom already. Anyone know what's going on?

Your screenshots and given that you're using a Mac, then I suspect your issue is the same one described in this bug report https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-gpu-develop-edit-view-amp-export-artifacts-a...

If you could submit a copy of your 'System Info', which can be obtained from the LrC Help > System Info menu item, we would be better placed to confirm that you've been bitten by the above linked bug.

Without knowing more about your system, I'll guess that your graphics card or screen are failing.  It may also be a graphic card driver that needs updating.   To me, that does not look like a Lightroom failure.
