Post Camera Raw feedback here

This thread is now closed. Please update to LrC 14.x or LrD 8.x. If you wish to provide feedback, please go to the new article.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look at Generative Remove, which makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions, even on complex backgrounds, with a simple brush stroke. Generative Remove is powered by Firefly AI.

How to use Generative Remove on a desktop:

  • You can find Generative Remove under the newly renamed Remove panel (aka “Heal”).
  • Make sure the “generative AI” checkbox is enabled before you start brushing (note: when unchecked, Lightroom will use Content-Aware Remove to fill your brushed spots).
  • By default, you will be given a moment to refine your selection with an add or subtract brush. Remember to include shadows for a more accurate result! You can also skip this step by holding down ‘CTRL’ on windows or ‘CMD’ on mac as you finish your brush stroke.
  • Once you’re ready to apply and have accepted the terms, Generative Remove will use Firefly AI to remove your distractions and intelligently fill in the space that’s left by the removed objects.
  • Note: stable internet connection is required to use this feature.
  • Generative Remove also lets you choose from multiple variations, so you can pick the one you like best, giving you full creative control.

Checkout the FAQ and Best Practices

Please give it a try and share feedback and/or report variations in this community forum. It would greatly help to include details like which app you are using (i.e., Lightroom Classic or Camera Raw) and other system details. Our team will continually monitor this thread to track issues to improve the future experience.

Update (Dec 2024):  With the new release, it is no longer necessary to perform Generative Remove Operations prior to Cropping.

Update:
Here are some tips if you are having issues with the feature replacing your object instead of removing it.
  • Enlarge your selection - if your brush stroke is too tight, you will have unexpected results.
  • Remember that removing an object means painting over it, its shadow, its reflection, and any non-contiguous pieces. If you leave behind a shadow, a reflection, or a disconnected piece (e.g., a hand on a shoulder), the AI will attempt to create something to cast the shadow, reflect, or complete the unbrushed discontinuous item. You can avoid these issue by following the guidance provided in this linked tutorial. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace

The recommended order for applying edits is:

  1. Denoise
  2. Heal (includes Generative AI Remove)
  3. Crop (includes traditional Cropping, Lens Correction, Transform, or any operation changing the geometry of the image, including round-tripping to PS to use Gen-Expand)
  4. Global Edits
  5. AI Selective edits (Sky, Person, etc)

If you deviate from that, you may see the removed object remain as a ghost image. If this occurs, you will have to use Update AI Settings, which can be found under the Develop module 'Settings' menu.

Using the upgraded 13.3 in LrC and it seems the 'Object Aware' does not detect an object.  If I switch this off, the Gen AI can undertake a reasonable job, but with Object Aware switched on I keep getting an error message saying 'No object detected'.  The file attached is one example - I have also tried it on people, cars, and buildings - the same error is returned.

Hi,

I used the new generative remove some items from a few photo's in LR classic and thereafter imported my .nef and .xmp into LR cloud (generally used for remote access and back-up storage). However, in doing so, the generative remove edits made in LR classic did not transfer into LR cloud. Not sure what I could have done differently to maintain those............

I'm experiencing a similar behavior. I see the generative remove corrections in the cloud copy of the picture on my smartphone, but I cannot edit the picture with the LR app on the smartphone. I keep getting the error message, that the app is waiting on settings data from LR Classic.

My setup: LR Classic 13.3 on Mac Studio M1 with 14.5 Sonoma and LR App on a Samsung S23 Ultra.

One major improvement that would be extremely valuable - allow the generative remove to work at the edge of a photo after it has been adjusted using the transform tools, to fill in the white space that is left over.

This is an extremely common scenario for me where I have to go in to photoshop just to fill in a little sliver at the edge of the photo. Being able to do that in LR would be a huge time saver.

In the new version of Lightroom classic (13.3, Windows), the removal tool does not work properly when the image is rotated (in all modes). When I mark a certain area, it selects a completely different area (usually on the opposite side).

Using this tool first before ANY edits in a photograph works best. See if
that helps in the future.

It looks like you've applied the 'Clone' to an image that already has an AI mask applied. If this is the case, there should be a red dot below the 'Mask' icon on toolbar. You should open the mask, then choose 'Update AI Masks' as shown in attached screenshot.

Figured out the problem on my end looks like when I upgraded the opacity reset to 0% on retouch tools when going into AI I couldn't see those controlls.

After removing objects via Generative AI and then adding a Mask, I am able to see the the objects. For example i removed lightposts in background via AI, and then added a select sky mask and i can see the objects that were removed.

example. Ai lightpost removed (photo1), Added Sky Mask (photo2), then the AI removal 'outline' can be seenScreenshot 2024-05-25 at 12.53.47 PM.pngScreenshot 2024-05-25 at 12.54.03 PM.png

Please see below linked post for explantion as to what's happening and how to easily fix it.

Note that you can substitute the reference to 'Clone' tool in linked post with 'Generative Remove'.

Using LR CC I really appreciate be able to remove unwanted objects that sneak into my photos.  But when I tried to remove a human using  Generative Remove  it is replaced by another human. I am not sure why this happens. How can I remove a human and not  replaced by a human and just have a blank space where the human was?

Try selecting/masking the entire person to be removed. This includes any shadows, refelections or projections. If you checked both Generative AI and Object Aware boxes, then also try with only Generative AI checked.

Can you post a screenshot of the image before and after using Generative Remove?

Doesn't work; doesn't even finish and is stuck at 100% of the bar. Disabled my firewall even, to no avail. Feature's broken.

It doesn't remove the glass at all, only the tissue paper that was underneath the glass. The second and third options only changed the colour of the wine in the glass. So basically it didn'y remove the object I wanted removed.

This does not work. I have tried it now multiple times on two different images and all it does is give me the same item in the photo but in a very fuzzy appearance. The only way to actually remove an object is to edit the photo in photoshop. I don't understand why, if you can do it there, you cannot do it here.

It is a fantastic new tool for removal. However, if you have a black spot in the border it fails to produce any result. It has also failed to produce good resultas with black objects no matter when they are.

A promising start. I've found that after applying the generative AI fix to my image, if I sync exposure and mask settings from other images the AI fix disappears.
