P: People masking error dialog on systems with < 2 GB of video memory

I have just updated to v12.1 and I cannot use the new People masking feature any more, it worked perfectly with v12.0.  I now get a message telling me my computer does not have enough graphics memory when there has been zero hardware change to my Macbook Pro.  If I use any of my presets that use the People subject masking then they all work perfectly, so my laptop clearly works with people masking, it's just the People section of "add new mask" that's now completely broken!  Will have to go back to the old version...

Please refer to: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/select-people-mask-crash.html for additional information.

Please review your system's specs and compare these to the minimum requirements document (last revised at the Max October 2022 release): https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/system-requirements.html

Systems with less than 2GB of video memory do not meet the published minimum requirements for versions 12.0 (and later). While it is possible that these functions may have worked previously on a few individual systems, they are not supported.

As a Mac user (who is unable to upgrade your system's GPU memory) you might want to consider an EGPU as an option for extending your existing hardware if you wish to continue running Lightroom Classic 12.1 or later on your machine.

Regarding the apparent incongruity mentioned in this thread with Adaptive Presets still working despite People Masking being no longer supported, realize that the Adaptive Presets work on a 'skin selection model' not the 'people selection model' that is no longer supported. People Masking is not requisite for a skin-retouching Adaptive Preset.

Yes yes, I know the 2gb VRAM limit for People's detections in LrC; BUT while the damn thing (as espected) doesn't work on my main computer, a Mac Mini 2018 with Intel HD630 1.5gb VRAM, I discovered yesterday that it actually works on my backup OLD MacBook Air 2014 with a Inter HD5000 1.5 VRAM.

The MacMini is a powerhouse (3.2ghz i7 6-cores, 32gb ram) compared to the MB Air (1.4ghz i5 dual-core, 4gb ram), and the HD630 chip is waaaaaaay more powerful then the HD5000; how the fck is possibile? The function is (relatively) fast on the Air, so I would expect to be even faster on the Mini, what is going on there? It's so frustrating to have that function, which is super desirable as i'm a portrait photographer, is available only on my super old and super slow laptop...

Version is of course same LrC 12.3 and ACR 15.3 for both machines; how is that possibile? Is there any way to activate it on the Mini, which is clearly able to support it?

Others have observed similar. What's going is that the GPU compatibilty test run each time LrC is unable to determine that the graphics card falls below the specified minium amount of memory.

Il me dit que je n'ai pas suffisamment de mémoire graphique sur mon Mac mini 2018 version Ventura 13.3.1, or j'ai 32 Go de RAM.

Lightroom classic 12.2.1

Que faire ?

Merci

Your issue is not a bug and this thread will likely be moved 'Discussions'.

The 2018 Mac mini uses an integrated GPU that shares are portion of your main memory. Unfortunately, the amount shared is approximately 1.5GB whereas the minimim required for People masks is 2GB.

I've linked the System Requirements below for refence.

Again: your "minimum specification" are completely arbitrary; in previous version people masking was working perfectly. Please roll back this useless block, there is no technical reason why this should not be supported.

I actually owne macBook Pro 2019 13inch i5. Before the latest Lightroom Classic update 12.1 I found the Lightroom Classic 12.0.1 perfect for my job and then got the latest update notification so as always waiting few days and then I update, suddenly when editing portrait photos the "Detecting People" saying that my laptop configuration does not support it!! Just a software update will kill my job and the greatest update in lightroom. Why??

Question to Adobe:

Why should I "think" of changing my laptop just because of a software update ? (Knowing my laptop specs works PERFECTLY with Lightroom Classic 12.0.1)

Thank you.

PS: I am editing videos and photos from an external m.2 1To that gives a huge push for the workflow.

PS2: I love the fact that I can update and then come back to the past version and the project are perfectly opening and working 🙂

Hi,

I've just installed LR v 12.1 and now when I create a mask I cannot add a people mask. According to the mask panel my "computer does not have enough graphics memory to support this feature". With the previous version I have created plenty of people masks without problems. It was even fast. Is it a bug?

It's a bug, pure and simple.  This all worked perfectly in v12.0 and v12.0.1, and it still works if you use a preset that contains people masking, it's simply a UI defect that stops access to a function that works perfectly well!  I have gone back to 12.0.1 and guess what, everything works perfectly.  What I want to know is when are Adobe going to issue a fix for this?

I have a 2020 Mac Book Pro running the latest Ventura update.  My graphics card is an Intel Iris Plus with 1536 mb of VRAM.  It worked fine prior to the latest update, but now, when I chose the people mode, I get an error message stating the I do not have enough graphics memory to support the people masking mode.

I found that the minimum amount of VRAM is 2GB, but this graphic card worked fine in the 12.01 update. One person I know has the same size graphics card, but her chip is an Intel Iris Pro, and she has no issues. Has anyone else had this issue?  Any help is appreciated.

At each update, more and more functionality moves to the GPU. This is why an older version may not show such effects while newer versions will.

System requirements (older than the new update):

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/system-requirements.html

Ideally, 4 (or better) 8 GB of VRAM.

@klwbrue has already discovered the requirement for at least 2 GB of VRAM to use People masks, but for others, Adobe has documented this as "a known issue":
