This problem typically manifests when the Uninstall of any version of Photoshop is the last Photoshop Install/Reinstall operation performed.  If the last whole-app operation is an install or a reinstall, it typically cures the issue. The Photoshop team is aware of the issue

It normally happens to customers who have more than one version of Photoshop installed or are running the current version alongside a Photoshop Beta version.

If you encounter an issue where PS will not launch on an "Edit in…"

August Update! If you see this issue with the August release of Lightroom Classic v14.5, check the pinned comment in this thread: P: LrC 14.5 Edit in Photoshop does not work when opening RAW photos

Adobe LrC & Photoshop  Beta Issue with Virtual Copy

  • Mac OS 15.3.2
  • Lightroom Classic v14.2
  • Photoshop Beta v26.6

LrC -> Photoshop Beta v26.6

Started with a raw file in Lightroom Classic v14.2

  1. Using initial import step (oldest entry in history of edits) I created a virtual copy - successfully
  2. Edit VC in Photoshop Beta => opens photoshop beta -> no file is passed to photoshop

LrC -> Topaz AI Beta

Started with a raw file in Lightroom Classic v14.2

  1. Using initial  import step (oldest entry in history of edits) I created a virtual copy - successfully
  2. Edit VC in Topaz AI Beta => Presents options to edit with Lightroom Adjustements, Edit a copy etc and file format
  3. Opens the tiff file in Topaz successfully, even quitting Topaz the new tiff file appears in LrC
  4. Edit photoshop beta on the new tiff file works as expected.

Note:

  1. attempting to edit the VC in photoshop beta still fails as described above
  2. Adding an edit to the VC has no effect on the issue
  3. Opening the VC as a smart object in photoshop beta successfully opens the file

Same issue happened when trying to open a tiff file from LrC to Photoshop beta,  I get to select edit with options then the beta opens and stays on the first page.  However if edit that same file in Topaz, do not save, and then try with ps beta it does open.

After forcing an uninstall of the ps beta, keeping configuration files, and reinstalling may have resolved the issue.....

I edit my initial images in Lightroom. When they are looking nice I open them (from Lightroom) in Photoshop Beta. It's a great workflow. But today after the latest update Photoshop Beta will not open the image. It launches and then nothing. I have already closed both apps, restarted Mac Studio, even tried opening the images from the root folder (which open fine in PS but none of my Lightroom adjustments are there.) Any ideas?

FYI: I deleted Photoshop Beta 26.6.0 and installed Photoshop Beta 26.5.0 and the workflow is back. Adobe… there is a glitch FYI

I'm glad to know that I'm not alone! I'll try your workaround with the older version of the application.

Hi, thanks for reaching out! Would you mind telling us what happens when you try to open the images in Photoshop from Lightroom? Are you getting an error or a prompt? Also, which macOS version are you working on?

Thanks,
Nikunj

Mac OS Sequoia 15.4

In Lightroom, when I click on “Edit in Photoshop”, the Lightroom “Opening in Photoshop “ status bar stalls at around 3/4 of the way. After a minute a pop up message appears: “Edit in Photoshop failed. File could now t be opened in Photoshop."

I just installed the Photoshop Beta 26.6 update. It did not contain a solution to the "Edit in Photoshop" bug. Still waiting.

Hello, I just installed Photoshop 26.5. After this installation, LR would not transfer raw files to Photoshop for editing. I rolled back to my last version of Photoshop 2025 26.41 and now the LR transfer to Photoshop works again.I turned Adobe Auto Update off until this is resolved.

I have no problems with PS 26.5 on my Window's system, however I have no access to PS 26,6 (beta) so I am not able to comment.

Same problem occured in the middle of processing a number of photos. One moment it worked, the next it did not transfer file from LRC to PS. Following advice inn this forum I uninstalled PS vers 26.5..0 and PhotoshopBeta and reinstalled only PS. It is now working. I hope it continues. Is this is not a bug which Adobe should ackowledge and fix?

LRC is not sending files over to external editors like PS, Luminar Neo, or Topaz.  It opens the other program but never sends a file to it.  Running Win 11, 64-bit.  I have installed and reinstalled as well as rebooted and nothing fixes it.

What a mess.  I can't open a photo from LR into PS and if it somtimes opens, I can't save it.     I also don't get a choice whether I can open in PS Beta or regular PS.   I also can't import from my own HD into LR.  It says no photos in the directory but I know there are photos there.  it's all a mess.

I'm running Sequoia 15.3.2 on Mac.

My workflow involves editing single or multiple Lightroom images in Photoshop and then reimporting them.  This used to work smoothly.  But now when I select "edit in Photoshop" Photoshop opens but the files won't transfer.   My only workaround is to export individual images by clicking "open as smart object in Photoshop.'" That only works for single images, and the edited file, doesn't automatically re-import to Lightroom.  This started a few weeks ago, and happens on all my workstations.  Any ideas?

@dig12Thank you for posting. Reinstalling Photoshop should fix the issue. However, before you proceed with the reinstallation, we need to collect some additional information to understand the problem, as we haven't been able to reproduce it in-house. Please let us know if it's okay to direct message you for more details. Thanks!

I need help...In the past ~few weeks, I can no longer right click and select from a few "edit in" options like "edit in photoshop"...all the options are greyed out.  What's strange is all the images I'm trying to edit are local and images I could edit-in before no longer allow me to.  I am logged in to CC and all apps are up to date...Nothing has changed in my behavior or how I import images and I haven't moved my catalog.  So, I'm stumped as to why all the sudden, these options are all the sudden not working.

I did browse a few similar topics in Google, but, those threads were several years old and I didn't see any resolution steps.

Oh, and yes, I've restarted my PC.

Any recommendations out there?  Hoping I get some guidance beyond "try reinstalling everything".

Jeff
