P: Tethering support requests and information

This post is applicable to Lightroom Classic.

ETAs for tethered support for specific cameras are not available.

Tethered Capture is a feature of Lightroom Classic that allows the direct connection of your camera to the Lightroom desktop environment. Images are imported into your Lightroom catalog as they are captured via the connected camera.

New camera support for reading the raw files is generally added quickly after a camera is released by its manufacturer.  New camera support can be verified here: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

Tethered support for a particular camera model normally follows a version or two after the raw file support. Adobe relies on the manufacturer’s (Nikon & Canon) SDK (Software Development Kit) to facilitate the tethering of your camera to Lightroom. The timing of the release of a manufacturer’s support via their SDK greatly affects the time to release for tethered support. In addition, Adobe goes through a rigorous process of integrating the functionality of the SDK and tests tethering before support is announced.

To see if your camera is supported for tethering on your version of Lightroom, refer to this document: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support.html

If your camera is listed, but your Lightroom version is too old, you may need to update or upgrade to enable tethering.

If your camera is not listed, and your camera’s raw file isn't supported, you would need to check with the camera’s manufacturer to see if they support tethering via their SDK.

Note: Not all camera manufacturers or models will necessarily receive tether support.

Any chance as well actually making a public statement on Sony tethering - maybe tell your clown of an admin to stop merging my topic into this dead, utterly redundant thread?

"Any chance as well actually making a public statement on Sony tethering - maybe tell your clown of an admin to stop merging my topic into this dead, utterly redundant thread?"

@Alan21885756v1lo

All requests for tether support for unsupported cameras are merged into this thread. It isn't dead nor is it redundant. One reason, among others, is to give Product Managers and Engineering Team members a single source for customer information regarding tethering. The same is done for Camera Raw Format Support, Camera-matching Profile Support, and Lens Profile Support. This is far more efficient than herding the random scattering of dozens of posts across years of forum threads.

Posts regarding tethering "how-to", "bug reports", and "feature requests" are welcome and encouraged as individual posts.  However: "Why isn't brand? model? mode? etc, supported?", belong here.

Adobe's public statement regarding tether support has not changed and is in the link on the original post in this thread. If there is a change that Helpx doc will be updated.

Lastly, I recommend you review the forum Terms of Use: https://www.adobe.com/legal/terms.html  also linked at the bottom of each page.

How can the question belong in this thread when you can't even answer it?

Adobe are not providing tether support for Sony cameras and there is no mention of why that is the case. Absolutely nothing in your original post refers to why that's the case or if it is going to change in the future.

I posted this thread earlier and a moderator moved it into a year old thread that absolutely does NOT answer the question. This is what I posted:

- I'm really confused about why Lightroom STILL doesn't support tethering with Sony cameras. It's almost like you guys are begging industry professionals to move to Capture One. I'm genuinely one of the few remaining people in my industry locally still running Lighroom now. What the heck is going on?

Please do not merge this with an irrelevant topic. I am a paying customer who would appreciate answers instead of my question being buried.

If you look at the list of Cameras supported for Tether Capture it's basically specific Nikon and Canon select models a couple dozen of the multiple hundreds / thousands Digital Camera models available. So it's not only a snub of Sony.

Maybe it's related to lack of mutual cooperation between Adobe with the Camera Manufacturers?

I can tether just fine using my Olympus Camera’s software..

https://helpx.adobe.com/si/lightroom-classic/kb/tethered-camera-support.html

Is there a problem with Sony's tether software?

They support every main camera from 2 out of the 3 top camera manufacturers. Sony are inexplicably left out and Adobe are saying absolutely nothing about it.

Lightroom Classic doesn't support tethering of the Sony ZV-E10. More details on which vendors and cameras that are suppported can be found at https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/tethered-camera-support.html

Google translation: "Nikon Zfc, Z9 Lightroom tethering support update. When will the Nikon Zfc, Z9 Lightroom tethering support update be released? It's been quite a while since the camera was released, but Lightroom tethering is still not supported. I want a quick update. "

The official Adobe thread about tethering says: "Tethered support for a particular camera model normally follows a version or two after the raw file support. Adobe relies on the manufacturer’s (Nikon & Canon) SDK (Software Development Kit) to facilitate the tethering of your camera to Lightroom."

LR first supported the Z 9 in LR 11.0 (October 2021).  But Nikon's Camera SDK (which LR uses) didn't add tethering support until June 2022:

https://sdk.nikonimaging.com/apply/

There have now been two releases of LR since Nikon added support for tethering the Z 9.  We might expect the third release, LR 12.1, sometime in December.  Maybe that will include Z 9 tether support.

Re the Z fc, the Nikon SDK doesn't support tethering for it, so LR won't support it either.

Dear @Rikk Flohr: Photography Thanks for having added R5C Raw Files to LR, but we're still missing the Tether Function... to fully use this great hybrid camera, we would love to have that back. (And of course.. Native M1 Tethering would be most welcome) Thank you very much, Kevin

Hi Adobe

When will tethering be possible with Canon EOS R5 C? I'm surprised that it is still not possible with the new update.
