P: Unable to locate Local Adjustment Tools (Brush, Gradient, Radial)?

I recently purchased a new laptop (ThinkPad) after my old one (Lenovo) crashed.  I just purchased the Lightroom Classic for my new one and cannot find the effects brushes for warm skin, teeth and eye whitening, iris enhancement, etc.  I was told these were standard in LRC but I cannot find them.  I think I remember buying them as a package from Cole's Classroom that contained these but I cannot find them on their website to download them again.  (I've asked on a group support page - as Cole's doesn't have email assistance available, according to their website - but can't figure it out.)  Any advice on how to get these effects brushes, would be GREATLY appreciated.  Thank you so much.

Hi,

Thanks for reaching out. We are sorry about the trouble with Lightroom Classic. We are here to help!

Local adjustment tools or target adjustment tools have been consolidated in to the masking tool.

Masking was introduced with the release of Adobe Lightroom Classic 2022 (11.0 & later), which consolidates and offers you a variety of local adjustment tools in an organized panel. Check this video to learn more:

Heidi - you articulated the issue perfectly! I have been searching for the Local Adjustment brush icon where I have (or used to have, anyway) a large number of custom brushes. With the latest update, I have no local adjustment brush icon. Someone suggested it has been consolidated under the Mask Tool/Effect. Nope - no adjustment brushes there. But then why would Adobe assume anyone would think to look in the Mask Tool for adjustment brushes?Anyway I still can't find the answer to "where is the local adjustment tool" and it is from that menu that I do a large amount of my touch-up work. User-centric, uh, no. Intuitive UI, uh, no to that also.

Does anybody know where the Local Adjustment Brush (icon) is located in Lightroom Classic 12.2 (MAC).  Any direction will be greatly appreciated!

Click the little round icon next to Red Eye removal and it will open a Masking panel with all of the masking options.

Rikk hello,

Thanks for getting back to me. I actually found a video that gave me a hint and from there I found all the burshes. When I clicked on the Mask tool, the local adjustment brushes weren't visible, blocked by the Mask adjustement menu below. The video informed it the mask menu could be move and once I did that, I saw the adjustment brushes. The video is a good one for those who aren't familiar with the mask menu changes. The link below will take anyone interested to the video. Thanks again for the quick reply.

I* don';t understand why Adobe persists in changing perfectly functional tools and controls just to make them different (they do the same thing but Adobe has decided to move them). Photo processing has a workflow that is based on knowing where the controls are. Moving stuff around may be fun for the coders, but is just annoying to the users. PLEASE!! Unless there is a clear advantage to doing something LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

Thanks.

They didn't just do it to make them different. This is a complete misundertsanding. They did it to ADD features and make a MAJOR increase in functionality. I do understand why Adobe does this.

Also, they did not change the tools, they are still there. They changed the interface.

I see the answers below but wonder why Adobe keeps changing things and even the name of things, e.g. "radial filter (now called gradient)".  About the time I begin to understand  at least some things it is changed and I have to spend an hour doing Google searches to figure it out. Makes using the program very very inefficient but I'll keep trying I guess.

You no  longer need to spend an hour searching Google, just come here and examine the release notes that follow all updates. For example, this is efficient:

Not sure what happened but I thought there would be more options where I can make certain things brighter and darker in this menu. I updated my Lightroom and it disappeared. Can anyone help?

In Develop where "two squares", the "eye", and the "fuzzy sun" now apear there was another feature that allowed you to select an area and then perform edits to that area, such as darken, lighten, and eye enhancement. I used the eye enhancement (Or whatever it was called.) feature regularly and it worked splendidly. Maybe you have moved it to a hidden place, as I can't find it. Upgrades are supposed to make programs better, not remove useful features. Will this feature return or is it sadldy "lost forever?!"

Can this same effect be obtained some other way. As I recall there were certain controls that were preset, but the old feature is gone and I can't remeber them.

Everything is still there. Some of the features are now moved to the Masking tool.

You might want to spend some time reading about the new masking tool. In fact, whenever Lightroom Classic updates and you open it for the first time, a dialog box explaining the new features appears, and I strongly suggest you read the information there.

Everyone take a deep breath! The brush tool hasn't disaappeared. The radial filter is not gone. All the local adjustments you are used to are still in the newest upgrade to Lightroom Classic (released Oct. 26 2021) There's a new icon under your HISTOGRAM. It's a circle with marching ants (dashed lines) around it.

Click it.

You'll see your brush tool, radial filter (now called gradient), linear gradient, and all the range mask tools. Plus, you have a couple of extra options (Sky & Subject).

All your effects presets should still be there.

It may take a bit of getting used to, but the tool is more powerful now.

See below, do you see them using the paths directed?

Did you try toggling on and off "Store Presets with Catalog"?

File location changes for Develop Presets

With this release, the following changes have been made in develop presets:

FILE STRUCTURE

  • Any newly created develop preset will now be stored at the following locations instead of the existing hierarchy-based file structure.
    • macOS - /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings
    • Windows - C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings
  • (Presets stored with the catalog): If you've enabled the Store Presets With This Catalog option in the Lightroom Classic preferences, the presets and templates files are saved at: MacHD/[catalog location]/[catalog folder name]/Lightroom Settings/Settings

It's Great!  🙂 And NOT gone!

Read and learn about the updates -

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/whats-new/2022.html#masking

And Brush is still available with keyboard [K]. Linear Gradient [M]

I have Lightroom Classic  on my Macbook Pro and have installed som preset brushes, but I don't have the brush icon under the histogram.  I can hit K and I get a mask menu, but I have a yellow warning next to brushes.  Any help would be appreciated.

We are now a good week into v11 yet members still do not read the documentation or watch video.

Ok venting, moving on

see:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/lightroom-classic-11-0-is-now-available/td-p/12471067

and from that, see a Adobe document that should be read before trying the new version (this is nothing new, comes under the concept RTM)

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/whats-new.html

and in that a section on Masking, and before you get into more issues, a section on Metadata

Also, a long but inclusive video, well worth the watch:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7Fld8eEHsE

Note, a lot of venting from Pro Wedding Photogs, they cannot understand why Adobe would release a major upgrade during peek season. Well it is peak Adobe season, Adobe always releases the big upgrades this time of year. And Adobe cannot cowtow to just one group. Their main issue is a learning curve. They should have not allowed an automatic update on a working computer. Problem? Roll back.

Why the venting? Well, when you have to suddenly edit 100 photos and suddenly there is a learning curve and you can't do quick edits for quick turnarounds. And thanks, I did read the documentation but if I have to read it and watch videos, it's not intuitive. I did roll it back. Venting over.

I seem to have lost these tools since updating Lightroom Classic. Where have they disappeared to and how do I get them back?

me too, I only have mask  spot remover  crop and red eye, I cannot find the adjust ment brush tool  anywhere  and it is not under histogram that i googled.

this user interface is very difficult  to  find things  imo. I am not an advanced user.  so I would really appreciate if it was not so cryptic. Is there still an adjustment brush?

Can you post a specific video related only to the adjustment brush and where to find it.  I dont see it anywhere  in these tutorials, or How can i revert back to the old version? I like the masking tools but really want to see the adjustment brush too handily with an icon up top . not all hidden under panels i cannot find.

My goodness, if I just scroll up a bit from your first post, there's several videos linked.

Does anyone else or am I the only person that has problems with Lightroom each time a new version comes out?

I have updated to version 11 today and the brush tool has completely disappeared.

I talk to technical support they say to try the older verison I do that and I can't access the lightroom catalog anymore because its been converted to version 11.

Can anyone recommed a better software solution that Lightroom for windows. I don't think I can handle this cycle of updates that ruin my day each time they are forced on me.

"Does anyone else or am I the only person that has problems with Lightroom each time a new version comes out? "

I can't talk for others, but personally I've never had any issue when updating LrC. I've used it since v2.0, on Windows.

"I have updated to version 11 today and the brush tool has completely disappeared. "

There has been a major update of filters/brush, now called masking. See here for more:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/whats-new.html

"I can't access the lightroom catalog anymore because its been converted to version 11. "

As with previous major updates, LrC did a copy of your old catalog and created a new one for LrC 11. If you haven't manually deleted the old one, it's still there 😉
