With the latest LrD 7.0,  LrClassic 13.0 and ACR 16.0 release, here is some additional workaround that you can try:

If you encounter GPU driver issues while using ML features in LrClassic/LrD/ACR, please try to update to the latest macOS version or if you are on a Windows machine, follow https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html to update your machine to the latest GPU driver and  see if the problem resolves itself.

If the OS or the driver is not available or possible

Check your GPU driver for updates.

If you do not have a desecrate GPU, but just an integrated Video controller (Intel on a laptop for example) check that driver for an update.

The latter was another members problem/fix

John, I don't know yet. After installing the new Intel driver, Windows 10 immediately "updated" it back to a "very" old version.

I got around this by Rolling back the driver which restored the new driver and hopefully, it will stay that way (until I update again).

I'll report if the error comes up again. and check the GPU log.

The issue may be related to your GPU driver. Try turning the GPU off in the Preferences > Performance tab. You should also check this thread for more information, etc https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-masking-unexpected-error/idi-p/12476035

Hi Ian
Turned the GPU off as instructed. Same error message occurs so it appears
to be something else. Tried the thread you attached which also points to
the same result. I tried the windows error messages link but nothing popped
out as relevant.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers bruce

Adobe staff are monitoring posts relating to this particular issue. In meantime, it would be hepful if you could attach  a screenshot of the first 30 or so lines of Help>System Info. I've included an example below.

Adobe employee Simon Chen said that setting Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor to Off won't change whether the AI in Select Subject and Sky uses the GPU. But the evidence so far is pointing to out-of-date graphics drivers, and at least a couple have reported that updating following the instructions in the help article linked above to update their drivers cured their problems.

I updaed all the drivers. Updated a photo using the select sky.  When I tried to add a second change, I receive the error that says "Something went wrong". Then when I tried to select a new photo, LR would not display the photo. The software is is usless as is.

As requested by Adobe employee Simon Chen above, please do the menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents here. That will help Adobe identify the problem graphics hardware and drivers. (So far, the few who have done this all had older Intel graphics chipsets.)

FYI---just got off a "chat" with adobe (1.5 hours). He took over my machine. Rep completely messed up my version of LR, it is now unusable (will not launch with my pictures).  He is referring my case to an "expert" team who are calling me back tomorrow.  BTW - never mentioned the drivers, and didn't even look at the version.  Seems to me that Adobe has a problem and they are still fixing it....Seems that these days it's perfectly fine to push out poorly tested software.

@paulao65014850 , unfortunately Adobe support has a long-term reputation for being hit-or-miss, usually more miss than hit, especially with anything other than the most routine issues.
