When I use the dim / lights-out mode (shortcut L), everything, including the photo, gets black. In the past only the background got black, I can't seem to find the issue and are not able to solve the problem. I am using Adobe Lightroom 6. Do you know how to solve this?

The photo itself should not black out. If you disable GPU in preferences, does this change?

If not, try resetting your preferences.

Quit Lightroom Classic.
MacOS: Press and hold the Shift + Option keys.
While holding down the keys, launch Lightroom Classic.
When asked, select "Yes".

Thank you for your reply, both solutions unfortunately didn't work..

The MACOS Dark out feature has been a long term issue with Lightroom of various versions, Adobe may have fixed this for Lightroom Classic, but would have not bothered with v6.
