Question

Previously Imported Photos no longer in Catalog (apparently) but also show as already imported

LrC 12.0.1

Windows 10.0.19044

While revisiting a folder from 2019, I noticed some of the pictures were not showing up in Library View (with filters off).  Checking the folder in Windows Explorer, all the "missing" DNG files are still in the folder.

The Integrity Test runs clean.

Selecting All Photos and running a search on one of the "missing" files comes back No Match Found.

However, attempting to reimport the files they show as greyed out, already imported files.

I suppose I could force them to re-import but then I suspect I'll lose my edits (I thought they were saved to the DNG file but just learned I should've been using "Update DNG Preview & Metadata").

So, it seems like some of the information is in the catalog. Any ideas on how to recover it?

Thanks.

In Lightroom Classic, please perform all 4 of these tasks in order and let us know if you find the photo this way.

  1. Click on All Photographs
  2. Turn off filters
  3. Expand all stacks (Photos->Stacking->Expand All Stacks)
  4. Search for one of these photos by file name in the Filter Bar

Never re-import. This will cause you to lose all your work on these photos and solves nothing and usually makes things worse. Better to fix the problem — first step is to find the photos in LrC.

DJ - Thank you for your response. Unfortunately the photos were still not found.

While doing that, I noticed entire folders showing 0 photos but when importing they show as already imported (see attachments).

Thanks, but Show Photos in Subfolders is already selected. Neighboring folders list their pictures, EXCEPT the folder right before the two zero-files folders is missing about half of its imported photos.

I ask again: Is it possible the photos are in your catalog after all, but were renamed (and copied to another folder)? That would explain why Lightroom can't find them when you search by file name, but still shows them as already imported. If you go to 'All Photographs' and set the sorting order by capture date, it should not be too difficult to check this.
