Print tab in LrC under OS Ventura messes up Color settings in Epson driver

LrC v 12.3 Build [202304101834-a085245c]

MacOS Ventura 13.3.1 / Mac Studio

Epson driver 12.62 for P800

Sequence to set Printer to manage ColorSync:

- in LrC print tab, add new template

- set Color Management to Managed by Printer

- set page setup to letter size

- in Print Settings... using None for Epson presets set Color Matching (radio button) to ColorSync, pick a profile for Luster /hit OK; set Printer Settings>Media to Ultra PPP Luster /hit OK /hit save to close the printer dialogue box.

- right (option) click on template name>Update with Current Settings (template name is highlighted)

After these steps I expect that if I click again on Print Settings... (while template remains highlighted) the above settings would have been saved. They are not. The dialogue reverts to Epson Color Controls and PPP Glossy for Media.

Alternate sequence (LrC Color Management):

- in LrC print tab, add new template

- Pick a Lustre profile under the Color Management tab in LrC / intent set to Perceptual.

- Print Settings... using None for Epson presets reveal Printer Options: Color Matching is grayed out, ColorSync radio button = on (but grayed) /hit OK; set Printer Settings>Media to Ultra PPP Luster /hit OK /hit save to close the printer dialogue box.

- right (option) click on template name>Update with Current Settings (template name is highlighted)

Following these settings I expect that pressing Print Settings... again would show what I set (while template is still highlighted). Instead, Media has reverted to Glossy. ColorSync radio button is still on (grayed).

For both scenarios I left Epson presets to None following Andrew's recommendation (The Digital Dog). I have tried using Epson presets too, but got the same results. Media always reverts to Glossy, profiles are "forgotten" etc (when Printer manages color).

So, for either Color Management paths (whether printer or LrC manages color) the Print Settings... saved for a template do not hold. As many here have found, the only way to print is to use the Printer... button and set all the above color settings for each print (except the LrC Color Management tab that stays stable).

It's good for an occasional one-off print - but I could do that from any program with a print dialogue.

FWIW Epson has not released updates for Ventura (at least for the P800). I did reinstall the driver and removed/added back the printer in System Settings. Also, both Photoshop and Lightroom Classic have Full Disc access. The bug persists after a complete Shut Down/startup cycle.

Hoping that Apple/Adobe/Epson get their act together on this one.

Current Epson driver 12.62 works perfectly under macOS Mojave 10.14.6 / LrC 10.4

Just wanted to take Epson out of the conversation.

I posted this report under "Bugs" and it got moved to "Discussions", which means it's not an Adobe issue. As Andrew Rodney has repeatedly said here, we should take it up with Apple. Half a year and three rounds of revisions later (13.3.1), seems Ventura is not ready for prime time. I had hoped Adobe would press Apple on this rather than us minions, but I guess printing is of a low priority these days?

Currently I'm forced to dedicate an older machine to printing (Mac Pro 2013 "trash can") running old software (see above) at the expense of fewer OS security protections. This can get uglier yet...

Sadly, Ventura 13.4 (released May 2023) offers no fix for this. LrC remembers Color Management settings for its own Print tab, but the Epson driver reverts to Glossy media no matter what (ie settings for the driver are not saved in LrC Presets).

Looks like Epson Print Layout is the best workaround (at least for some file formats).

It's baffling that Epson and other programs have no problems printing under Ventura while LrC remains buggy...

Have you used Epson Print Layout? Do you know the pros and cons?

Thanks,

This is an Apple bug, it's been around since Ventura was released, although it's often intermittent. You can get the settings to work if you futz around enough with the settings for the Epson print driver. But check every time as it isn't always (as it should be) sticky. I can get my P800 to print as it should, but I have to check the settings every time. Complain to Apple; it's their bug.
