morning! thanks for the suggestions. flash drive works on lightroom 5 still installed (thank goodness). i was able to write to this flash drive when i tested the lightroom 6 before i subscribed. I'm thinking i have 2 options. one: cancel subscription adobe/lightroom classic. wait 24hrs and re subscribe. two: use as is. it is an inconvenient work around but it does work....and then there is always the chance that if i cancel and resubscribe same thing will happen. your thoughts are appreciated.

I doubt very much that this could have anything to do with your subscription, so I think unsubscribe/resubscribe won't do you any good.

johanEL54 THAT IS IT EXACTLY!!!!! once the file name is filled in at the top of the dialog box the save button is activated. (thus by clicking on random file in dialog box this would fill in that field and allow the save button to become activated)!!!!! thank you johanELS4.

Would it be possible that the original image is missing? For example because you store the images on an external hard drive and that hard drive is not connected right now? Lightroom can't print (to file or to paper) while the original is missing.

thanks for the info. hard drive and photo are avail. not being a techy person this is going to sound crazy but here goes....i have a folder on my desktop which contains a file titled h resume (my work resume). when i hover on this particular desktop folder the print button lights up, and i am then able to print to the flash drive. i have been able to replicate this action 4 times. I'm not really sure what/why i found this solution. could the print command somehow have sync. to this particular file in this desktop folder?

I just did a quick test. Print to file brings up a dialog to name the file and to choose the destination. Lightroom does not pick a name. Giving the file the same name as a previously printed image simply asks if you want to overwrite it. The button stays active and cannot be influenced by this, because you click the button before you choose the name and the destination. They only way I can grey out that button is if there's nothing to print because no image is selected...

The OP has been rather unclear in describing her problem, but since she has said that the Save button is greyed out, I think that she is referring to the OS's Save dialog window that LR calls up. That is the only place where she would see a "Save" button, not the in the LR Print Module interface where the relevant button is labelled "JPG File".

To Heather > I strongly advise not using the Print to JPG File function to output edited jpgs, but rather the Export function. At least until you hav learned a bit more "tech". Print To File can be tricky. For instance, it will resize your image so that it fits on the paper size you have selected at the resolution (PPI) you have selected. It will include in the new jpg any margins set for the print. Export is comparatively straight-forward.
