Prior AI mask edits all need updating

I have found the latest version 12 requires updating of ALL previous image edits undertaken using AI masks.

Open edited images where masks have been used, select masks and message appears alongside a triangle with a ! : "Some AI masks need to be updated". Anyone else find this problem? Any simple solution or do I now have to re-edit all images because the new masks in version 12 corrupt work done in prior versions?!

after many, many attempts with completely useless support agents who just discarded my issue I finally found one who tried to help. I wouldn't call it a "solution" but they had me create a new catalog and import the old one, now I can work with masks again.. of course had to spend lots and lots of time to get there, broke my cloud sync, etc.. but at least masking works now.

Had the same issue, my mask would need recomputing after 5 or so images, so no batch exporting or batch settings pasting. This solved my problem for now, so I tend to think that this problem is somehow related to the catalog.

I just spent about an hour chatting and screensharing attempting to solve this. Adobe support is absolutely awful. The only thing they suggested was uninstall reinstall (didnt work), then said i have to export the images with the ai settings to save the images. so, i edit an image and then export one by one. seriously? i'll try this. what a joke. current version of LR and macos.

Just create a new catalog and export this catalog to the new one. That
solved it. --

Does this not work?

In Library grid, select all the images and do the menu command Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings.

@Rikk Flohr: Photography , Why is there the necessity for the menu option "Update AI settings", I guess it's because the AI settings are not stored in the Catalog File like other regular editing functions?

Surely if this is the case then Lightroom Classic should automatically ensure that the process is completed before the application is closed.

I just came here to say that I started having this issue in Lightroom yesterday and it is driving me up the wall. If I navigate away from a photo for even a second, all AI masks or subject selection need updating.

It's a huge time-kill as well, because my workaround has involved exporting each photo individually after editing. I can't batch export, because every photo that isn't the active photo will have lost any edits that involved AI masks.

I had the same problem and I tried every trick I could imagine. After a many failure, I solved this misterious issue by exporting all my catalog to a new file by Export to new catalog function. Lightroom creates a new catalog and a new .lrcat-data folder. After opening the new catalog, AI masks do not ask for an update everytime I open Lightroom and everithing works just fine. May be the issue is connected to a light corruption of catalog or ircat-data content.

I hope this information can help somebody in trouble like I was.

I have been experiencing all of these issues I am reading about for awhile now but kept thinking it was a fluke with an image. I am now realizing it's consistent. I have wasted so much time trying to fix it and trying to search for others having these issues. Even if I get it to recognize a person, it doesn't mask things properly anymore. I don't mean by a little. It's completely off on everything, which makes it completely useless. Would this issue be created because I move my external drive from my desktop to my laptop? It's never been an issue before. OR would the use of Filter Pixel have caused some issue because it seems to coincidently have started around the same time I started using that application?

I'm seeing exactly this issue. Add some content aware healing, come back to the image a day later and it wants updated.

Selecting the images and running update from the menu is a work-around. And it relies on knowing and remembering it's needed. Work-arounds aren't the same as fixing broken functionality.

And to the suggestion of importing to a clean catalog, that's a helpful option to diagnose if it's due to crap in the database, but it's a gawd-awful solution (because it throws away so much of your data - just watch it wipe all your collections and publish service content - that's a big fat no thanks).

@Barrie Spence "Add some content aware healing, come back to the image a day later and it wants updated."

Yes. Exactly as it is designed to work. If you change the sky by changing a dust spot, you need to recalculate the sky.  See: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/p-perform-spot-heal-removal-before-sky-...

Nope, that’s not it. Making an adjustment to one image should not require
all images to then be updated. That makes no sense. Also whenever you open
up LR you should not have to update all AI edits on all photos. It’s
insane. Spent an hour with adobe and the only suggestion was to u install
and reinstall - didn’t work. Proper customer support would be a very simple
solution here.--

The comment addressed @Barrie Spence's question (included in quotes) and may have nothing to do with your particular issue.

Most people do not have to update masks frequently. You likely have a different issue as your failure mode is very different from what the quoted poster descrbes. I would recommend you create a new thread with full information rather than comment on a seemingly unrelated thread. You will get better response and a quicker resolution to your problem.

Sorry, but I'll call that extremely poor design and UX.

And I don't have skies in my images. No AI selection mask. Just some content-aware heal.

I heal something on an image now, I expect it to stay healed on the same (unmodified) image 2 hours later. That's not what we're getting.

Explain to me why it needs to update settings if nothing has been changed on that image?

The last history step was publish (hard drive), the step before it was "update AI settings" and when I open the image now, I've got the "Some content-aware settings need to be updated" warning.

At this point, I can't trust LR using content-aware to deliver client work because apparently the edits don't actually stick.

I think you've given your answer without actually listening to the issue being described. Please try harder before being outright dismissive.

@Barrie Spence It sounds like you are having an issue with Content Aware Remove masks and not AI masks then? You should start a new thread as this one is regarding AI masks needing updated.  Please include complete system information and step by step workflows so that the community can assist you. The behavior you are describing is not normal behavior.
