Raw + Jpeg import issues, Raw files missing

I often use a Camranger when shooting architecture and so when doing so set my camera to shoot Raw + Jpeg (S2) so that I have a smaller file to transmit and view on my ipad. Upon import into Lightroom using a card reader, if everything goes right there will be a Raw file and a Jpeg file each with their own file number. I then simply delete the Jpegs and work with the Raws. Problem I'm having is a few Raw files will instead be imported as Jpegs. So instead of raw and jpeg for each image, there will be two jpegs. It happens in a totally random fashion, spread throughout the card, maybe about 5 percent of the files. I then have to reload the card and when "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates" is checked I can see right away which Raw files were not imported first time around. This of course is not an ideal situation, to have to import multiple times. Can someone offer any input as to what's going on. I did not have this problem in the past, and cannot remember if it started with the last LR update or not. Using Lightroom CC and Canon 5D M4.

There are a number of similar reports of this happening, where RAW files are not imported, but duplicates of JPGs are created, or something similar. I suggest you file a bug report with Adobe. Photoshop Lightroom | Photoshop Family Customer Community

Hi,

this "raw-jpeg register or conversion error" has also happened to me during the last months. I use canon 5D3 and always register raw on the one card and jpeg on the other. I solely import from the raw-card. First time I thought it was me but here I sit at my computer after shooting the supermoon tonight and again I have a bunch of jpegs amongst the few raw-files! Funny enough most of the jpeg's are seemingly sharper than the raws and they all have a histogram reading. The raw's didn't. After deleting them all from the HD and reimporting, I now have raw files only (...and none with a visible histogram...).

On purpose I haven't yet done the latest updates. (Since the new LR Classic CC generation came.) Possibly that fixes this issue?...

Anyone who wants to fill in here?

Same problem here. Using LR for Mac, if I import Raw and Jpeg at the same time it is screwed up.

In my case it only happens at the first import after starting LR, so I import 2-3 files first, delete them and then import all the files. Then everything runs fine.

New to LR. I imported raw photos from iPhoto and the arrived as JPEGs.

That's not possible, as Lr does not convert files during import, except if the "Convert to DNG" is clicked. Then RAW files will be converted to DNG files, which is still a RAW file format.

As you are using a card reader, I suggest copying ONLY the RAW files to the disk and importing from there (like a standard import).

Control at each step the pictures (number, type, ...)

Additionally: If you are shooting 2 cards, save the JPEGS on one, RAW on the other.

(These are my first thoughts on this, may be I have more ideas when I think on your problem).

Interesting, I did not realize you could write raw to one card and jpegs to the other. I will look into that.

And yes, it is possible for Lightroom to import a raw file as a jpeg because that is exactly my problem, even though it should not be possible. Sounds like it is indeed a bug based on another response. Regardless thanks for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it!

While you state that Lightroom is importing a raw as a JPG, I believe a better description of what happens is that somehow the import (whether it is LR or your operating system, or maybe even the camera card) gets confused somehow and imports the JPG twice, and doesn't import the RAW. So I do not believe that the RAW is converted to JPG at import.

Also, have you actually used your operating system to view the files on the card to be sure that there really is a JPG and a RAW for the case where you get two JPGs? Because without doing this step, you can't rule out that the problem is in the camera somehow, it is writing two JPGs and no RAW. Somewhere, there is a bug, and it helps to rule out as much as possible.

Good point, it may not be converting the raw.

There is indeed a raw file there, it shows up in finder, lightroom import screen, and it happens on both of my Canon 5D M4's. When I import a second time I am able to import the raw files that did not go through the first time. So that is my work around at the moment which isn't too big a deal but a bit inconvenient and not exactly reassuring.

Since no one has an answer maybe someone can suggest how in the hell I am able to contact an actual person at adobe to help me with this. I've tried and tried and it all leads me to the Adobe forums.

I should add that I have used different cards, another 5D M4 body, have checked and unchecked "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" in the LR preferences, shot with and without the camranger, tried different Transfer File settings in-camera, and none of these things made a difference.
