Renaming files: how to selectively remove and substitute text?

Explorer ,
May 26, 2019 May 26, 2019

So my file naming convention is

[camera name]- [camera assigned sequence number]- [place] - [month]-[year]

I just too some images with my Fujifilm X-T2 in Arkansas on May 25. By mistake, I forgot to edit the file renaming box in the Import module before importing so they got the name of my old import.. The files actually imported as

XT2-15100-Tulsa-05-2019

I want to rename them in LR but retain the camera sequence number only. They should look like this:

XT2-15100-Arkansas-05-2019

I don't see a way to change Arkansas to Tulsa but retain the rest of the filename. I can do that with a file renaming program outside of LR.

Possible?

iMac / Mojave / LR CC 8.3 / Mac OS 10.14.4

Edit: Do NOT rename outside of Lightroom!!!

With the release of Lr-Classic v8.3 the original File Number Suffix is preserved in metadata irrespective of the photos being renamed at Import or at a later date.  (Previously the File Number Suffix was cleared if renamed at Import!)

So if you imported these photos with v8.3 you can rename with a corrected template that preserves the camera sequence number.

This rename template should do it for you-

ScreenShot491.jpg

Or, even better, you could make a more 'universal' preset template that asks you for the [place] when you rename-

ScreenShot492.jpg

ScreenShot493.jpg

You might then always use this (one) template and simply enter the 'new' location [place] in the Custom Text box.

I replied but I made a mistake. Here is my corrected reply:

Here is an example. The filename I need to correct is      _XTT7587-TulsaBotanic-20190505.RAF

The image was taken in France. The camera assigned number is the 7587  and when I entered custom text, I added the 20190505 manually typing it in, and not from the Metadata.

I want to preserve the 7587.  When I used the template editor, here's what I saw:

Screen Shot 2019-05-26 at 4.52.27 PM.jpg

The template editor is picking up the data I had typed into the custom name previously. It did not pick up the 7587 which is the camera-assigned sequence number.

I would like this image to be named:    XT2 - 7587 - France -05-2019

Thanks and much appreciated.,

OK, so now the rename is more problematic.

Obviously you must have renamed these photos at Import with Lr v8.2 or earlier, as Lr has not preserved the original 'Camera' File Name Suffix.  It is now getting the File Name Suffix from the current filename _XTT7587-TulsaBotanic-20190505.RAF.

There may be a plug-in available, but none come to my mind at present.

Next suggestion might be to ignore my previous advice and use a rename app 'outside' of Lightroom- one that can preserve only the _XTT7587 portion of the filenames, then in Lightroom use the "Find missing photos" to re-link to the previews.

(I use Lupas Rename for these type of jobs. It can selectively delete prefix and suffix characters, etc )  Do not use the Import or Folder Synchronize unless you are prepared to lose ALL LR editing done with these photos.

I would like this image to be named:    XT2 - 7587 - France -05-2019

You should be able to do this using a third-party plugin: Complex file renaming in Lightroom made simple(r) – Lightroom Solutions

Unfortunately, that is not (yet) true. I have asked Adobe to add this too. Right now, the original file name is preserved, but 'original file name number suffix' is not yet available in the rename dialog. Only the current file number suffix is, and the complete original file name.

Thanks Johan,

I was hopeful but now disappointed. But I guess the recent change has me one step closer to renaming with the File Number Suffix after having renamed at Import.-

1) Rename to  "Preserved Filename"

ScreenShot033.jpg

2) Rename with File Number Suffix.

Does LR store the sequence number somewhere, so the next import continues the sequence or does the counter get reset after the current import?
