Resize vertical images to a horizontal format

Community Beginner ,
Jun 12, 2010 Jun 12, 2010

How do I resize a vertical photograph to fit a horizontal format without distorting the image? I do not want to crop the photo because I will lose parts of the image. I was given specific dimensions, 427x320 or a similar ratio, and this works for images that were taken horizontally, but not the vertical shots. I am very new to this process and am not sure what terminology to use, so I need some pretty basic help.

You can do 1 of 3 things:

1. Crop

2. Distort

3. Size to Fit within the Dimensions

Thank you.

I am typing in my dimensions in the resize portion of the export, but it is keeping the image in a vertical format. I've tried typing as both 427x320 and 320x427, both keep it vertical. Where do I distort?

I've tried typing in my dimensions when resizing during export, but it keeps it in horizontal format. I need to change

it to hortizontal, even if I just shrink the photo down to fit the window with excess on either side. Is this possible?  What

is distorting, and how do I do that?

Thank you.

Without cropping?  Impossible.

you can distort in PS by changing the image size.  But YOU DONT WANT TO DO THAT (the image will look like shit). Use the arrows at the bootom of the library module to switch from horizontal to vertical and vise versa

I use the arrows in the library module to flip, but then the image is not facing the right way, if that makes sense. I need to shrink the vertical photo so that it fits into the size of a hortizontal photo window.

you will have to crop it or image resize in PS (distort). But as i said before: You dont want to distort.

Cropping does not work because I lose half of the image this way. If I want to try to distort, how does that work? Is it the same place in export? I have tried working with different dimensions there, but I don't know if I'm changing the size of the file or the size of the actualy photo. I need to shrink the actual photo so that it fits into landscape vs portrait format. Where and how exactly do I do that?

I was sent a template that is the correct size for the photos I need. I was told to drag my photo into it, positio and save in order to get the landscape format. Can I do this on lightroom 3?

Not natively. there might be a plugin for the export process but i dont know of any. You can use PS, Gimp, or any pixel editor. I think that Microsoft Paint can do it as well but  Im not sure about that.
