RTX 4090 Support?

There seems to be an issue when "Use Graphics Processor" is turned to Auto or Custom in preferences.

I have RTX 4090, running latest Nvidia drivers, system (Win 10) up to date, so is LR Classic. Tried reboot etc.., the issue still persists.

When I make a chance to any image, there is a spinner in the lower right corner that never goes away (have to restart LR). The issue is only resolved by setting "Use Graphics Processor" option to Off.

Is this a known issue?

What if your catalog is not stored in the cloud?

Adobe does not support or reccomend that.

My catalog is not stored in the cloud, it is stored locally on my E drive. It is only backed up to the cloud.

Catalog is stored on the local E drive, which is backed up to OneDrive. I've stored it this way for around 3 years, no issues.

To build on GoldingD's comment, your catalog is stored in a folder managed by Onedrive. If you configure Onedrive to access those files "on demand", or set similar options with Google Drive or Dropbox, that won't work well with LR, since the service will remove the catalog files from your local disk when you're not using them and try to retreive them when you next start LR. The catalog files are typically very, very large, and LR, the service, and the operating system won't play nicely together in such instances.

If you don't set that option, causing the file to always be local to your disk (as well as backed up to the cloud), that often works well, according to a fair number of reports here over the years.

Similarly, if you mark your photos as on-demand with any of those services, that often won't work well, according to many reports here.  But not setting the option, so that the photos are always local but backed up to the cloud, usually works.

"When I make a chance to any image, there is a spinner in the lower right corner that never goes away (have to restart LR). The issue is only resolved by setting "Use Graphics Processor" option to Off."

These symptoms strongly indicate an issue with your GPU or its driver:

"DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 (31.0.15.2225)"

That high-end card and driver are just a few months old.  LR is very sensitive to driver bugs (of which there are many, which is why manufacturers continually release new versions).  Try downloading the 12/18/2022 driver:

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/197460/en-us/

Also, make sure you've got all manufacturer-default settings for the card and aren't using Nvidia or third-party utilities to overclock, etc.

That is the only thing I can think of. I first experienced it when I first got the card, shortly after it was released. I used the latest and greatest driver available at the time, which was all I could do. So that got me thinking if maybe there was an issue with LR fully supporting this GPU and if it ever got solved, I can't be the only one with this GPU using LR.

I will try to update the driver again to see if it behaves differently and will report back.

In my case, all my OneDrive files on this machine are synced on the local drive (not on demand). This is a desktop PC with large drives, so no concerns about storage capacity. Media files sit on a different volume, completely outside of OneDrive folder. So as far as the operating system is concerned, the catalog file is just another file on the local disk drive.

Adding to what johnrellis stated about third party overclocking. While I do not think the NVIDIA controller settings will be an issue, other third party GPU overclocking will. I state this due to another members issues with a new high end NVIDIA GPU, turned out a third party GPU overclock utility was the issue.

The third party utility in question was MSI Afterburner. the post is:

Interesting find, thanks for that! I do use Afterburner when using the GPU for gaming, but most of the time the card is on default settings. I will need to dig into this some more to first of all reproduce the behavior again and confirm that not using MSI afterburner solves the issue. Not sure why it would matter as LR does not interact directly with Afterburner, which is only used to set hardware properties of the card. BTW, I tested the overclock potential of my card potential and found stable settings using a variety of benchmarks, but none of that is being used for LR. Anyway, I will give this a shot and see if resolves the issue. Thanks again!

LATEST

So yesterday, I updated the driver to the latest and greatest Game Ready driver. Tried using the crop tool again and got the error. Popped open Afterburner and noticed that I still had +150 MHz applied to Core Clock and +1500 MHz to Memory Clock. Set it back to defaults and no issues! I think the issue is more related to the overclock than the fact that Afterburner is running.

Today I forgot that I have Afterburner running in the background WITH OC applied and LR is happy, no isssues.

I think to be on the safe side in the future - it is best to just stick to default clock speeds to avoid LR issues.
