Ok, first up remember most of the responses you will receive in this community site are from fellow Lightroom Classic users. Not Adobe techs. I am not an Adobe tech.
Second up, nope, my experiance is exports go swiftly.
Moving on
First inquiry.
Exactly where are you exporting to? You stated Desktop, but that can mean different things to various people. The actual desktop space on the computer, the main screen? Or desktop meaning your desktop computer?

I export them to a folder in Finder using my Mac. The location is desktop.
I’m working on a Mac laptop with 250gb memory of which half is free
space. I mention this since one source said be sure your memory has at
least 20 or 25% free space or something to that effect.
Appreciate anything you can do as this is painful!

And yes, lots of questions instead of answers
If you are actualy exporting to your computers desktop, is the desktop included in the Folders panel in your catalog in the Library module? Not sure if that can be done, not at a computer to experiment.

And if actualy exporting to the desktop, does the export go quicker if you export to a folder instead?
Note: make sure the folder is included in your Folder panels structure. Apparently Lightroom export works better if destination is included in folder structure shown in folder panel (not sure if you can include desktop)

And final inquiry, actually a request.
Please post your system information as lightroom reports it. In lightroom click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste into a reply. From first line down to just past plug-in info.
good night
