In grid view, selecting multiple photos (maybe over 50) and using "Read Metadata from Files" is magnitudes slower than previous releases.
(Writing metadata is very fast)
During the process - if running only lightroom - system memory is hogged (16GB system running down to 19/20 MB) In previous releases (pre 11) this was not an issue. I have been working , editing metadata outside LR this way for many years.
Current preferences:
Save XMP as changes made disabed.
Write metadata to JPG/TIF/PSD etc enabled
Mac system. Macbook Pr. OS Montery - fully updated. 4K HDR monitor. Data sored on fast thunderbolt drives.
metadata is being written form photomechanic.

Additionally - trying to view / edit the meta data panel of any other photo while this process is running is impossible. Keywords pane just displays "working"

I'm having a similar issue: takes more than one hour to read XMP data from 143 photos and 3 minutes to open an image in an external editor (Edit in ...) for exporting the file, then it takes about 30 seconds to star the image. During that time, the CPU load is 100% and the computer fans get to maximum speed. This started with the release of Lightroom Classic 11.3. System info below; currently it's unusable.

Having the same issue here with 11.3 and 11.3.1 except I'm using Aftershoot.

I have been experiencing this exact issue! I'm using AfterShoot to cull then when I go back to lightroom its takes hours to read XMP files for 5500k images. In the past, this process was a few minutes. What's going on Adobe?

Yes, I can confirm. Feels like a bug to me. I get about 0 minutes to write 400 10KB files and about the same time to read them from disk on a Mac Studio. Please fix this.

Same problem for me—painfully slow—trying to read in the xmp side car metadata for a few thousand files will run the entire night and still not be done.

Thanks for the recommendation! That didn't help the situation unfortunately. This has been an issue for at least several versions and maybe much further back as far as I know.
