Some of Color Labeles Are Gone (LRC)

Explorer ,
Jun 13, 2023 Jun 13, 2023

Hi,

I'm experiencing the same issue described in this thread:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/color-label-disappeared-bug-14-6-fixed-in-14...

Some of the color labels of the photos in some of my Lightroom folders are gone.

I tried to open a new catalog and import the old one, but it didn't work.

The Lightroom classic release is 12.3 (even though on the creative cloud it says the version is 12.4... strange).

This is very important for me, can you please help me solve the issue??

Thanks

Yes, by creating a new custom label set. Don't try to change the default sets, because they may get reset with an upgrade.

Open a label set (any of them will do) from Library Module > Metadata > Color Label Set. Edit each of the labels to meet your requirements, then choose 'Save Current Settings as New Preset...' Now make this the default label set by reselecting it from the list.

Ok, I did that, but the 2 defaults didn't marge. Do you know why?

There is no 'merge' option. As said before, you have to manually change all the labels the way you want them, and then save this as a new set. The defaults will stay as they are.

I don't understand. I can change manually the 'Lightroom default to 'new Lightroom default and the 'Bridge default' to 'new Bridge default and I'll still have 2 presets. Can I make it to one preset?

What you need to do is select a random label set. It does not matter which one you select. Next change the names of the colors to what you want them to be. Then save this as a new preset. You should now still have the old presets, plus the new one you just created. If that does not work for you, then record a screen video so we can see what you do and what happens, otherwise this thread will never end...

So how would it benefit the situation?

This way you can create a color set that matches the label names you used, and so your color labels will show once again.

OK, all of a sudden I think I know what may have happened, and why you want to 'merge' labels (which is impossible, but we'll discuss this later). What I think may have happened is the following: when you started out using labels, you had one of the default sets selected (it doesn't matter which one, but let's say the set that uses the words of the colors, so a red label is stored as the word 'Red'). You started to label some photos with a red color, and so Lightroom saved the word 'Red' in the label field.

Then one day you (inadvertently) changed to a different label set. This set does not use the word 'Red' for a red label, but another word (I'm typing this on my iPad so I can't check what words the different default sets use, so let's just say that this set uses "No edits'). You did not notice that changing the set made you lose your existing red labels, so you marked some more images with a red label. But this time Lightroom saved 'No edits' in the label text field. Then, more recently, you did notice you lost some red labels...

The problem is that you now have images with the label text 'Red' and images with the label text 'No edits', and there is no way and no color set that will mark both these words with the same red label color! No matter which set you choose, one of these words will show white labels! Saving a new custom set will also not solve this, because a set cannot use both 'Red' and 'No edits' for the same color.

So how do you solve this? The only way to solve this is by choosing one set, and then changing the white labels. That should be possible because Lightroom can search (in the filter bar and in smart collections) for label color and for label text. So let's say you decide to use the set that simply uses the word 'Red' for red labels. Switch to that set. Then what you need to do is search for all images with the label text 'No edits'. Select them all and apply a red label to them. Lightroom will then change the 'No edits' text to 'Red', making the red label appear on these images too.

Does this indeed sound like what could have happened?

Unfortunately, not. There are only 5 coloured labels available and label sets cannot be merged. A label can be customised anyway you like, but customising a label (e.g. changing red to To Delete) means that any existing label with that colour will become white.

You created a thread for this issue using near enough the same text issue back on 13 June. Why have you created another?

@Rikk Flohr: Photography please merge this thread with original thread at https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/some-of-color-labeles-are-gone-lrc/m-p/...

I see lots of responses to your request for help. What I don't see is information from yourself in the form of text or screenshots that would help us to help you. Instead, you've linked to an unrelated thread in the Premiere forum when already told that the issue there has nothing to do with LrC.

BTW, I have responded directly to your earlier reply. My response includes screenshots
