Spot Removal not saved to XMP sidecar for CR2

Adobe Lightroom Classic v11.3.1
Windows 10 Pro, Version 21H1, OS build 19043.1706

Checked "Automatically write changes into XMP" in the Catalog Settings.

I create a few Spot Removals for a CR2 photo.
I close Lightroom Classic.
I copy the CR2 and its XMP sidecar file to another folder
so I can experiment with different settings.
I open Lightroom Classic.
I import the folder.
The Spot Removal points should be saved in the XMP file.
For some unknown reason, the Spot Removal points are not there. Why?

Thank you for the feedback.

Correct answer richardplondon

I see no difference between Sync Folder and Import, in this respect: the XMP is seen and loaded as the initial set of editing either way, and in my test just now, that includes spot healing. This is assuming the image had been removed from the Catalog in the meanwhile. Sync Folder has an additional role besides invoking imports: it can compare and sync metadata, and then resolve in various ways any mismatches of internal and external metadata, for images that ARE (still) imported.

Importing the folder does not use the XMP.

Apparently, you need to synch the folder to have the XMP used.

I want to delete this thread, but I cannot find a delete thread button.

richardplondon - Thank you for your valuable feedback.

My previous reply occurred before I received your reply.

The "Saving XMP" under my name was not in Pause.

For some strange reason,

importing the folder did not use the XMP even though it had

crs:SpotType="heal"

It worked when I used synch the folder to have the XMP used.

I need to experiment again to see if this was "fluke" or reproducible.

Thank you for your help.

I suggest, open the XMP file in a text editor (Notepad is fine) and search for the text "SpotType" - below is an example screengrab extract.

to confirm that the spot heal / clone had been written. Sometimes XMP writing is not instant: it may wait until you finish using that particular tool, and move on to some other form of edit. Or: it may be still busy writing out XMP from other images' edits and not yet have caught up with this one. Or: it's possible to pause the writing of XMP, even though that is set to happen automatically - click your name at top of interface, there are three pause / resume options presented from there. You can see that I have currently got Address and Faces paused, but not XMP writing.

I have just tested this out (applying spot heal, removing the image from the Catalog after checking XMP had been updated, then re-importing) and spot heal was loaded in along with the other edits. I am on LrC 11.3.1 with Windows 21H2 - I doubt that the difference of Windows build is significant there. This was done with a Pentax PEF (proprietary Raw) and hence into a separate XMP file, same as what happens with CR2.
