Whenever i select a mask for a subject it makes the subject go dark (this is not the mask overlay), if i come out of the mask selection the subject stays dark until i delete the mask. This is making editing very difficult. Please help

Sounds like you have Reset sliders automatically checked.

If you had Exposure set to say -1 for the previous mask, it will be applied to the next mask.

Unchecking it should fix the issue.

Hello, unfortunately that is not checked so its not that. This is also being done before any adjustments have been made. It just makes the subject darker and stays that way unless i delete it. I can obviously edit the mask but it looks terrible

Its not that either. It shouldnt be affected by any sliders resetiing or not ressetting because as previously mentioned no editing has been done so theres nothing to change. I have attached a before and after picture to hopefully show what is happening. As stated nothing has been changed all i have done is masked the subject. Thanks for having a look

If you have activated a selection mask in any way (Subject, Brush, etc), another possibility is the mask overlay is set to 'Black' . Opacity of the black overlay will appear like darkening (grey).

It is not easy to predict an answer to your question without seeing the full Masking panels that will show mask options and adjustment sliders.
