Whenever i select a mask for a subject it makes the subject go dark (this is not the mask overlay), if i come out of the mask selection the subject stays dark until i delete the mask. This is making editing very difficult. Please help

Sounds like you have Reset sliders automatically checked.

If you had Exposure set to say -1 for the previous mask, it will be applied to the next mask.

Unchecking it should fix the issue.

Hello, unfortunately that is not checked so its not that. This is also being done before any adjustments have been made. It just makes the subject darker and stays that way unless i delete it. I can obviously edit the mask but it looks terrible

Its not that either. It shouldnt be affected by any sliders resetiing or not ressetting because as previously mentioned no editing has been done so theres nothing to change. I have attached a before and after picture to hopefully show what is happening. As stated nothing has been changed all i have done is masked the subject. Thanks for having a look

It is the cause of the problem -- see the attached screen recording where I replicated the exact appearance with Reset Sliders Automatically unchecked.

You had edited a previous photo with that option unchecked and with these settings for local-adjustment sliders: Texture = 23.967, Clarity = 37.19, Dehaze = 52.066. (*)

Then when you edited IMG_6514 and clicked Masking > Subject, the settings of the new mask got set to the previous local-adjustment settings. Since the Effects section is lower down in the panel and might have been collapsed, it's easy to miss.

With Reset Sliders Automatically checked (prior to creating a mask), when you create a mask, all of its local-adjustment settings will be 0.

(*) I know those exact values, since you helpfully provided an exported version of the edited photo rather than a screenshot, and the exported version contains the Develop settings in its metadata.
