Unable To Open LrC Newer Than v11.0.1 on macOS 12.3.1

Mac mini 2018 running macOS Monterey 12.3.1.  LrC v 11.0.1 installs and runs fine but when I attempt to upgrade to v11.1, 11.2, 11.3 or 11.3.1 Lightroom hangs on the splash screen, won't open my catalog and I have to do a force quit to close out. I have Googled for answers and searched in this forum and the Lightroom Queen forum where I've read of similar problems but haven't found a successful solution for my issue.

I've reset Preferences; I've tried reinstalling all of the newer versions; I've run Adobe CC Cleaner then reinstalled Creative Cloud and Lightroom; I've run OnyX.  Nothing has fixed my problem.  Prior to this I've had no issues with LrC upgrades.  I'm baffled, to say the least.

Here is a copy of my System Info run from within LrC v11.0.1 with the hope that an Adobe expert, that anyone, can provide a solution.

Thanks.

David

thedigitaldog speaks the truth.  (Of course.)  I just completed a Disk Utility Erase of my hard drive, reinstalled Monterey and LrC v11.4 opens and runs as it should.

My sincere thanks to all the people on this forum who spent their time to read my on-going saga and to offer suggestions to fix my problem.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. We are here to help.

Please install Lightroom Classic v11.3.1 from Creative Cloud but do not launch right after installation.

First, ensure Lightroom Classic has correct permissions to the macOS by following the steps I have shared here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/quick-tips-how-to-give-full-disk-access...

Once the permission is in place,

  • Press the Alt (Win) or OPT (macOS) when launching Lightroom Classic.
  • Choose the option to create a new catalog and create a new one on the internal drive.

SameerK_0-1654093080823.png

If a new catalog works,

  • Head to File > Import from Another Catalog, as shown below.

SameerK_2-1654093219212.png

Proceed with merging the (potentially)corrupted catalog into the newly made, internal storage-based catalog.

For more help via video-based steps, check here. See Merging individual catalogs into a master catalog

Please let us know if this helps.

Thanks!

Sameer K.

I will have time over this weekend to try your solution and will let you know the outcome.

Thank you, Sameer.

Sameer,

I followed your instructions to ensure the correct permissions were in place and restarted my mac. But when I press OPT and launch LrC the same thing happens, i.e., the spash screen opens and hangs up and nothing further happens. I am not given an option to create a new catalog.

Any other thoughts?

Try logging into another account (you may need to make one), still locking up?
Try starting up in Safe mode (hold down Shift Key when booting), still locking up?
You might want to try running a free utility like Onyx: still crashing?

Thanks for your suggestions. I had tried OnyX previously but it didn’t fix my problem. I started up in Safe mode and was able to successfully launch LrC v11.3.1. But I don’t know how to proceed from here. (When I rebooted my Mac into normal mode, v11.3.1 once again did not launch.)

That you can boot into safe mode an LR works mean something is conflicting with LR with a normal boot. Some software incompatibility. Now the hard work comes into play, what is it? You may need to start disabling startup items (do this in System Preferences, Users & Groups), one at a time, reboot and test LR. You will hopefully find an item you can disable that will allow LR to run, now you have to contact the manufacturer of that product.

There were only 3 items in startup. I removed them all but it made no difference. Thank you again.

There can (are) still processes that may still be running that conflict with LR. Short of a clean install of the OS, you can use Activity Viewer to kill processes until you find LR able to run.

https://support.apple.com/guide/activity-monitor/welcome/mac

Some process is crashing LR that doesn't in Safe Mode.

I wonder why a process running on my computer would prevent me from opening v11.1, 11.2, 11.3 and 11.3.,1 when I’m able to open and run v11.0.1 without any problems? Have Adobe changed something in those newer versions that could cause this?

Thanks.

Not yet. I haven’t been able to find how to disable third-party plugins when launching LrC.

Thanks for your suggestions.  I know how to uninstall plugins but I thought there might be some way to disable plugins when launching LrC.  Anyways, I reinstalled v11.0.1 which still opens fine for me, uninstalled all the plugins and reinstalled v11.3.1.  Unfortunately, it still hangs on the opening splash screen and has to be force quit to close it out.

You disable the plugins from LrC 11.0.1, then try to load and launch LrC 11.3.1

To recap, this is my situation:  Mac mini 2018 running macOS Monterey 12.3.1.  LrC v11.0.1 installs and runs fine but when I attempt to upgrade to v11.1, 11.2, 11.3 or 11.3.1 or 11.4, Lightroom hangs on the splash screen, won't open my catalog and I have to do a force quit to close out. With the release of v11.4 I had hoped my issue had been resolved but still no luck.  I have posted about this previously and those earlier posts describe all the numerous solutions that have been suggested by many good people on this site.  I've tried them all without success, except that I am able to open LrC v11.4 when I boot up in Safe mode.  I've then tried one-at-a-time opening apps that run constantly in Normal mode but each time I was still able to launch v11.4.  I understand this must mean that something running in the background is preventing me from launching v11.4 but I would really like to have the list of suspects narrowed down.  If I can't resolve this I might have to start looking at alternatives to LrC as it seems foolish to keep paying monthly for software that I can't use beyond v11.0.1.   I really don't want to give up Lightroom.  Any new thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed.  Thank you.

Yes, as I said, I have done all of those many helpful suggestions documented in my earlier posts but without success.  The only condition or suggestion that I've been successful with is running in Safe mode.  Thanks anyways though.

Just to explain my earlier response a bit:  Yes, I've tried granting Full Disk Access.  I've also reset Preferences; I've tried reinstalling all of the newer versions; I've run Adobe CC Cleaner then reinstalled Creative Cloud and Lightroom; I've run OnyX; tried logging into another account; I've removed startup items to see if they were interfering somehow; I've uninstalled my A/V software; I've deleted third-party plugins.  One of the Adobe employees, Sameer K, made a couple of suggestions.  I tried them, they didn't work or made no difference and when I reported back to him, he never responded again.  Nothing I've tried has made any difference.  It's frustrating.
