Upgrade problem from Lightroom 13.5.1 to 14.0 to 14.01

Community Beginner ,
Oct 22, 2024 Oct 22, 2024

Experienced a problem with the Lightroom Classic upgrade going from 13.5.1 to 14.0 and to 14.01.
I upgraded on the day of release (Oct 14th) and the actual upgrade from 13.5.1 to 14.0 appeared to have been executed successfully. Carried out some minor sanity checks to make sure the upgraded version was ok. Still had my usual problem where I’m unable to create large numbers of previews at a time – but that has been around for a couple of years so that was par for the course.
The following day version 14.01 was released and I updated. However, after this update, carrying the same sanity checks resulted in Lightroom crashing. The new diagnostic feature came up and informed me that problem was caused by 14.0 and a new version 14.01 was available for installation. I thought did I make a mistake and not install 14.01. Checked with Creative cloud app and that showed 14.01 installed on the system. Yet every time I started Lightroom and checked the Help/ About Lightroom Classic - version 14.0 was always shown.
I decided the best way to resolve this would be to uninstall 14.0/14.01 and reinstall 13.5.1 and then upgrade to 14.01 directly. I retrieved the 13.5.1 catalog files from the newly created Old Lightroom catalogs folder and unzipped the contents replacing the 14.x versions of files and then proceeded with the removal of 14.01 and reinstall of 13.5.1.
Once install was complete starting Lightroom 13.5.1 now resulted in no images being displayed – just gray boxes, or in the case where a color and star rating had been assigned, these were visible. As you can see the from screen grab below, Lightroom has access to the metadata associated with the images but it's as if the previews are somehow missing.

Ivang01_1-1729622689349.png

Followed this up by upgrading to 14.01 version again (thinking there may have been some other supporting files upgraded during the original upgrade to 14.0 that were now not compatible with version 13.5.1). The initial opening after the install of 14.01 indicated the Lightroom catalog was corrupt and needed to be corrected – the diagnostic tool corrected whatever the issue was and Lightroom started. The Help/ About Lightroom Classic now showed 14.01 as the installed version but no change in the Library view.
Now on 14.01 I’m thinking maybe it’s a problem with the preview and smart preview Lightroom files and maybe they just needed a “kickstart”. I tried to synchronize a folder and this resulted in a system crash with no files being synchronized. The new diagnostic tool this time reported no faults found. Following up on this I then tried to import a folder - again the process seemed to start but then crashed without importing anything. The new diagnostic tool again this time reported no faults found. This seemed to support my suspicion that somehow the preview files/folders are locked or corrupt and cannot be written to.
I still believe it’s probably an issue with the preview files/folders but have no idea how to verify or correct the issue. Is there some diagnostic information that I could provide for analysis purposes? System configuration file is attached

Hi @Ivang01

Thank you for reaching out and sharing details of the crash/issue you're running into. May I ask if you were able to share a Crash Report with Adobe? If so, can you PM me the email you used when submitting the report?

Can you also share your system info? You can find this by going to Help > System Info copying and pasting into a text file and attaching it here.

Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately I did not send the report in a separate email - I only allowed Lightroom to send the data to Adobe via the diagnostic tool.
The sytem info is attached below.
As there was no progress being made on this issue, I couldn't hang around with a basically useless system - therefore I decided to opt for an alternative, albeit long winded, solution. I had the all original files from the 13.0 generation of Lighroom, I therefore uninstalled 14.01 and installed Lightroom 13.0. started Lightroom, pointing it to the version 13 catalog and associated files. Everything was back to the status as it was prior to all the intermediate upgrades, all was good, images displayed correctly. - but obviously now there was a mismatch between disk status and catalog status - but I was ok with that, that was something I could work with. I then upgraded Lightroom from 13.0 to 14.01 and after startup I was at the same point as in my version 13. again I'm ok with that. As mentioned it's a long winded solution, I have now had to go through and synchronize folder by folder in order to bring the catalog and RAID back into synch ( which as you can imagine is a tedious process when you have almost 500K images on the RAID and I can't use the Parent folder in order to sychronize the whole disk in one shot, due to a previously existing preview creation problem (cannot create more than about 100 previews - smart or 1:1 - at a time, doing so results in a Lightroom crash. This problem has been around for at least 3 years )

Your screen capture is so incredibly small that I am guessing you don't have missing photo indicators, but I can't be sure.

Anyway, try this: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-do-i-change-my-monitor-profile-to-check-whether-its-corrupted/

Correct there are no missing photo indicatores - the suggested solution is not applicable - see my discussion above with CMass

Two issues in your postings that might help.

1. That screenshot of either Library or Develop module. It is too small to view, hard to tell what is what. It is like going to my Eye Dr, and trying to read that last line, fuzzy. Also, a more complete screenshot would help, the Histogram, the Navigation panel, and the Filmstrip can provide clues. Go for the full screen, and full size.

2. Your Windows System Info is helpful (maybe), and that is an extra, but mostly members want to see what LrC reports. Following is my SOP on that:

Please post your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LrC) reports it. In LrC click on Help, then System Info, then Copy. Paste that information into a reply. Please present all information from first line down to and including Plug-in Info. Info after Plug-in info can be cut out as that is just so much dead space to us non-Techs and it takes up vast amounts of scroll space making the reply less readable and less likely that others will bother with your post. (ah, but perhaps that adapter info might behelpful) Also large amounts of text in a post also render the Translate function inoperable.

Attached you'll find the requested screen shot of the Library view and the configuration file as seen by Lightroom, As mentioned in my original post I believe somehow the Preview helper files are either locked or corrupt. Prior to this series of emails I had reverted to version 13 series of catalog files, which I had kept, and apart from the mismatch between disk and catalog the image previews were ok - you can refer to my response to CMass earlier. Of course I would prefer to use this catalog set of files rather than the version 13 set as it is a long wiinded and tedious process to get disk and catalog back in synch - again refer to the response to CMass

In your System Info, I notice this section:

Adapter #1: Vendor : 10de
	Device : 2684
	Subsystem : 889b1043
	Revision : a1
	Video Memory : 24142
Adapter #2: Vendor : 1414
	Device : 8c
	Subsystem : 0
	Revision : 0
	Video Memory : 0

I suspect that Adapter #2 is your Integrated Video Control. Sometimes it is recommended to deactivate that in the Windows Device Manager, if having graphics issues.

GoldingD and AxelMatt as an FYI I have disabled the internal Intel GPU on the Gigabyte Z790 AORUS MASTER BIOS due to the fact that on restarting the PC  the internal Graphics adapter was always detected and enabled again

In your System Info, the section on Plug-ins, many older plug-ins. Now this probably has absolutely 0 to do with your current issue, and maybe just the ODD in me, but the older ON1 Plug-ins, 2023, 2024, are they still in use? Does the software they represent even still exist on your computer?  Clutter can be bad fir a database.

Ok, clearer. In the full screenshot, in the thumbnails in the Grid view and the Filmstrip, all those blank previews with those three dots upper right corner. Problem reading previews. Might be a problem with your preferences file, might be a problem with the Library preview folders.

GoldinD - by renaming the smart Preview and Preview folders - the images are now back. So my suspicion about the preview folders was correct - but I didn't know you could delete them and still have lightroom function. I'm guessing now I have to recreate all the previews again??

Thanks for your help - it seems I have a workable solution that needs a little polishing now. In addition I was able to build 2100 smart previews in one go - which I couldn't do previously - so maybe the 2nd GPU was causing a conflict

Your attach System infos are hardly to read, but as far as I see two points as a starting point for a closer look.

  1. You don't have installed the recent version of your graphic device driver. Please goto the NVidia site and download the latest version of the driver.Make sure that you're installed the "Studio version" and not the "Game Ready" version!!
It's recommended to use the Studio version.
  2. You're using a system with dual GPUs, that can be also the problem. Please disable the integrated GPU as described in section 6 & 7 here: Troubleshoot GPU issues | Lightroom Classic

Another point for gray previews can be a defective monitor profile.

See here How do I change my monitor profile to check whether it’s corrupted? | The Lightroom Queen and check.

Thanks for the response - just to let you know that the reason the latest version Nvidia driver for the 4090 GPU was not installed was due to the fact that when the latest version was installed via the Nvidia app I ended up with 2 black screens on the monitors and had to fall back via a restore point on Windows 11 to the earlier version. However I managed to install the latest driver veersion  yesterday via the updated Nvidia GeForce app. I always ony use the Studio drivers and always only do a clean install
As an FYI Enabling / Disabling the GPU made no difference to the problem.
Once I've collected the relevant info, as it requires me to reload the faulty catalog, (see my response to CMass yesterday) I will respond to Golding' post with the info

AxelMatt reading your post again I realised you were reeferring to the Integrated Intel GPU - that's someting I never thought of as it never shows up in Lightroom - I will disable that - thanks for that

DirectX: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 (32.0.15.6590)

That may not be the latest proper driver but be aware of this:

Good, they may have pulled it back as it was apparently buggy.
