Question

Video xmp saving every time i launch Classic.

Every time i launch Classic, Lr tries to save xmp for a random number (usually 600-1000 out of 2000) of .mov and .mp4 videos in my Catalog.  I've done nothing to the provoke the behavior and i'm not sure when the issue started. But with the last update that shows the xmp which is being updated, i can now see that Lr is trying to save for video files. Even more strange is that the media can be offline and Lr still tries to save the xmp.

Also, if i select video files in my Catalog and do a force save, I receive errors that Lr "Could not write metadata. Unknown file formats.

Any ideas how to fix or troubleshoot?

I'll help you figure this out. Have you set Lightroom Classic to write changes to XMP?

You can check this from Lightroom Classic > Edit > Catalog Settings > Metadata > Automatically write changes into XMP.

Let us know how it goes. Thanks!

Thanks, Sameer. Yes, auto-save is active. The problem here is that the xmp should not be saving every time i open Classic. Nothing has changed with the videos, either in Lr or on the disk, but Lr is trying to save xmp every time i open it. For example, i can open Lr, watch it try to save 1000 or so xmp, close the app and immediately re-open it, and Lr will again start saving the same xmp all over again.

What's strange is that LR has never implemented saving XMP metadata to videos, either in .xmp sidecars or directly into the video files.  If you post a full-resolution screen recording showing the bad behavior, that could clarify what's going wrong.
