Vignetting problems with lens profile for Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN

Hi, I am using a Sony A7IV with a Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN A020 lens. Unfortunately the lens profile fails badly at correcting the vignetting, see the attached examples. Both are with the lens profile applied.

I am using Lightroom Classic 12.5 on macOS. The camera and lens software are up to date.

The camera is embedding a lens profile in the raw that, per Sony's instructions, LR automatically applies:

As you can, that profile corrects only for chromatic aberration, not distortion or vignetting.

Sony's Imaging Edge application also allows a distortion correction to be applied, but not vignetting. So apparently there are no instructions embedded in the raw file for correcting vignetting:

Technically, Adobe could profile the lens and include the lens profile with LR, or Sony could enhance the embedded lens profile recognized by LR to include corrections for distortion or vignetting.  But there's a contractual business relationship between Sony and LR, the terms of which are not disclosed, so we don't know which company would be responsible for this enhancement.

Not sure I understand what you are saying exactly.

So to clarify, since the camera does not include a distortiortion or vignetting profile, and therfore Lightroom cannot correctly correct for those? I can still activate vignetting correction in Lightroom but it cannot (?) work properly? 

I find all this very confusing. I contaced Sigma about the problem and they explcitly told me to turn off distortion correction in the camera, so that Lightroom can take care of it on its own. But irrespective of the in-camera setting the Lightroom vignetting profile does not work properly.

There are lens profiles embedded in the raws by the camera, and LR may or may not apply those automatically.  With your camera and lens, the raws have an embedded profile that correct chromatic aberration only, and that profile is applied automatically.

Then there are lens profiles provided by Adobe in LR, which you can select in the Lens Corrections panel's Profile tab. Adobe doesn't provide its own lens profiles for all lenses, and in particular, it often doesn't provide lens profiles for lenses for which the cameras embed their own lens profiles.

So there are many lenses for which the embedded profile corrects just chromatic aberration but for which Adobe doesn't provide its own profiles, so there are no automatic corrections for distortion or vignetting.

But I misspoke about your lens, the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN. Adobe does provide a lens profile, which is applied on top of the profile embedded in the raw, and this profile provides both distortion and vignetting corrections. You enable Adobe's lens profile by checking Enable Profile Corrections:

By default, the profile provides some improvement to the vignetting, which you can see most easily by checking/unchecking Enable. You can increase or decrease the amount of the corrections using the Distortion and Vignetting sliders. To my eye, a Vignetting amount of 152 looks best with this photo.

Yes, I use these Adobe profiles by default for all my lenses. Normally the default setting works very well at correcting distortion and vignetting. However for the Sigma 85mm F1.4 it just does not work well (at least for me with the Sony A7iv). I tried adjusting the vignetting correction amount in the profile but no value gives satisfactory results. At 152 still a lot of vignette reamins.

We've contacted Sigma with this information and asked them to review their lens profile.

Has the profile been updated? I am seeing similar troubles with this lens.
