Why won't Lightroom/Photoshop open my RAW images?

When opening RAW photos from a new camera in an old copy of Lightroom or Photoshop, Adobe Camera RAW will give you an error message. It is usually because Camera RAW is too old to understand your images, and needs to be updated.

How to solve this issue:

1. Update your version of Adobe Camera RAW by going to "Help > Check for Updates…" in Lightroom or "Help > Updates" in Photoshop.
2. If your camera is not supported after updating, use the free Adobe DNG Convertor for Windows and Mac. This will allow you to convert of all your RAW images into a format that Lightroom and Photoshop can understand. If you want to use your own RAW images without converting, you will need to upgrade Lightroom or Photoshop to the latest version.

I am currently trialling LR5.3. I am unable to import RAW files from my new Olympus OM-D-E-M1 (.orf files). Although the camera is on your compatibility list, there is clearly a problem - the software is up to date but I get the following error:

Is it a limitation of the trial version?

Obviously I need to understand what is going on before I make a purchase decision

If you care getting the "could not be read" message, this is because you do not have WRITE permission to the destination folder (where the file is supposed to be copied into). So change the permissions on the destination folder.

Dumb question...  How do you change the permissions?  I can't find where to do that.

Since you don't state your operating system, go to your favorite search engine and type in either

change permissions Mac

or

change permission Windows

Is it necessary to purchase PHOTOSHOP with Lightroom?  What are the benefits of doing so?

No, it is not necessary.

However, in the future you should start a new thread if you question is unrelated to the topic of the thread. Or search the forums for an answer. The benefits of Photoshop with Lightroom have been discussed dozens of times.

у меня фотоаппарат canon 6d mark ii, лайрум не читает RAW, версия 5.7.1, конвертер тоже не конвертирует, что делать?

Lightroom 5.7.1 cannot read the raw images from a Canon 6D Mark II. You need to upgrade to (purchase) Lightroom 6.12 or Lightroom Classic CC. Otherwise, you can use the FREE Adobe DNG converter to convert the RAWs to DNG and import the DNGs into Lightroom 5.7.1.

Мой компьютер не поддерживает эти версии лайтрум.

и Конвертер не конвертирует файлы, пишет - папка не содержит  файлы Camera RAW

The DNG Converter works on entire folders. You have to select a folder and it will convert all files in that folder. You cannot select individual photos in that folder.

In the DNG Converter, you single-click on a folder to select it, not double-click on a folder to open it.
