Announcement on the 16 of June. Speculation is that Lightroom 6 will only be available on Adobe CC. True? Price? If it is your $50 a month I will be looking for new software.

Just to conclude this thread now that the new release is out – the definitive answer is that it's available either standalone as Lightroom 6, or via subscription as Lightroom CC...

The core program is the same (for now), however there are some differences between the two choices.

LR6 will likely stay as a standalone IMHO...

I cannot tell you how ill-advised making Lightroom CC-only would be!  I have a full CC account but still purchase Lightroom standalone separately. This is because of the nature of the product and its catalog.  Work/output created by everything else Adobe sells can (in some way) be converted over to a competing product except for Lightroom.  Unlike video (for example) there is no "exchange format" for Lightroom edit history (that I know of).

If Lightroom went CC, anyone with any sense would be compelled to make a clean break --freeze their catalog at V5 after finding a new stand alone photo management platform. You do NOT want to get into the position of having your previous work (edit steps) held hostage by overpricing.  Lightroom is unique in this regard and I don't think it's any accident that it has so far remained standalone.

I have a great reason why Lightroom should not be a subscription (only) offering : The whole model of Lightroom is to leave your edits in the catalog, not needing to export rendered images. Should my subscription lapse due to monetary issues or death, that would essentially render my catalog, and all is edits & keywords... Basically years worth of effort adding value to it,  obsolete.  Held hostage even from my family until someone pays for it. That would not be acceptable.

Perhaps I'd one day be willing to subscribe and get the benefit of Photoshop, but not unless there continues to be a standalone option so that my catalog is not rendered useless should I decide to stop renting.

I’m guessing LR may go the way of Photoshop Elements which has always been a perpetual licence, but Adobe is paving the way for Photoshop Elements Everywhere. So a choice is given where subscribers get regular updates and outright buyers have to wait for a major dot release or next version.

I think Adobe will wish to evaluate the success of the Photography Program (LR5+Photoshop CC) and the number of subscribers that renew. That will depend on the previous price promise.

But like all the others here; I don't know.

It was only a few months ago that Tom Hogarty (Lightroom product manager) stated Lightroom will be available stand-alone for the foreseeable future, or something like that.

I'm hoping he could see into the future more than a few months.. .

Reminder: Lightroom is not really part of the creative suite, per se, it's more like a "bonus" app for CC subscribers..

Adobe has actually used the word "indefinitely" in this context, so I'm expecting a stand-alone v. 6.

Ya know, the $50/month is for the full suite f products including; Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, FinalCut Pro, Premiere Pro, Dreamweaver and all the rest of the suite of products...likely ore than you need/want. The Photographers CC suite is $9.95/month...big difference in the pricing.
